My tripod leg collapsed and my gear, D810 plus 400mm 2.8 prime crashed to ground. Hoping Nikon can repair after they snapped away from each other. Grateful to have them insured. Need a new better tripod. For sure.

Sorry to read about your misfortune. I've been using a Gitzo for over 18 years. It readily supports my 4x5 on a regular basis. So, the smaller cameras are no issue what so ever. I think Gitzo makes some of the finest tripods out there.

Your post here should be what everyone reads first when considering a new tripod. I see many people buying cheap tripods and I even have a friend or two that have cheap tripods and your story is what they need to see as well. You are lucky that you are insured but most people aren't and that kind of repair is at least $800 an up. Good luck with your search on a Gitzo tripod. I have the series 3xxx and love it. Get yourself a good gimbal head too.

I’m very sorry about your mishap, so what was the capacity of the failed tripod, when I bought mine, used gitzo, there were a couple available and I picked the highest capacity even do it was an older generation 1 model.

I've got a couple of Gitzo series 5 tripods. They are aluminum, but people seem to want carbon fiber these days. I like Gitzo because they are sturdy, dependable, and you can get parts for them if the need arises. I will be downsizing soon, what do you think the value on this series is worth?

I question the part about getting parts if needed. I have an older model and a friend tripped on one leg and bent it. Was able to get a replacement leg.
Had to go to a machine shop to have it taken care of. It works, but not as good as new.

Well folks, I thought I bought a good tripod. A Nest. I have had it for a couple of years. Guess I won't trust it with heavier equipment. Love my Kirk ball head and wimberly gimble. Thanks for you words of kindness.

I am in the carbon fiber group. I do some cold, really cold, weather shooting in Alaska. But I thank you for your reply.

I’m confused is the tripod a Nest or Gitzo 5 series?

So you want to buy a Gitzo five series and why don’t you is it the cost?

Richard....despite insurance on the gear..I suspect it will still cost me something. Hopefully not. And now, I must buy a new tripod. Unexpected expenses. And sadly, I don't have unlimited resources. So I was trying to save wherever I can by buying used. Ya know?

eBay may be your friend or KEH for used tripods!
