and ha means basketball. a strange game. it took a devious mind to think it up. and more devious minds to frame the rules.
1 fouls are a part of game stragedy.
2 both the offence and defense can set up fouls.
3 where between fouls and time outs, it can take over 15 minutes to run the final 5minutes off at the end of the game.

Thanks for this. Helps explain why I dislike basketball so much. I think it's a boring, stupid game. Goes back to my high school days and going to the school basketball games. I found it annoying that the asinine refs were constantly blowing their crappy whistles.

Your number 3 applies to football, also. 15 or more minutes to complete the last 4 or 5 minutes of those games.

Yes, love sports but hate the length of games in a close score. In baseball, two opposing pitchers that are slow in delivery, you can figure at least a 3 1/2 hour game. In fact, the only sport that doesn't take very long in a close score is hockey. If the score is tie, they play a ten minute period, if still tie, they have a shoot out, at least your seeing fast action all the time.

Nobody goes to a baseball game because they’re in a hurry. It’s a chance to unwind, relax a bit and maybe see something you never have before.

Yes, that's true, but for most people, it doesn't take 3 1/2 to 4 hours to unwind.

It's a great game. You get to hit domeone 5 times before they make you sit down.

I agree with you Frank. I love baseball and long games don't bother me. Most of the time I record my games and then start watching them an hour or so after the recording starts so that I can fast forward the commercials. The only thing I hate is when the game is super long and my recorder stops before the game ends like when it goes into extra innings or a rain delay. Ugh! But 95% of the time that doesn't happen. They are taking steps to shorten the games by timing the pitchers. It is starting to work and they will start to enforce the clock more and more in the future I suspect.

I can also fast forward the game when they refs are reviewing a disputed play. Sometimes that can take a long time too.

It just seems like the final innings take forever because most ballparks stop selling beer in the 7th inning.

Outside of the main object of the game, putting a ball through a hoop, I've never been able to figure out the rules by just watching. That's due to the rather arbitrary way the games are refereed. So, I quit having an interest in watching a game years ago.

Two very good friends of mine coached high school basketball and one went on to the college level. I would go to some of their games but never really cared for the sport. The friend that moved to the college level at times would pull some the Bobby Knight antics. If you're not familiar with that it involved a lot activities that would get you ejected from the game. I also had a very good friend who coached little league baseball and was ejected many times. He coached my stepson from t-ball to about his senior year in high school. All of his team kids mostly grew up at my house or his. They all turned out great, graduated college, and have great careers. We still tell Coach Dale stories when we get together. A lot of laughs there. Unfortunately Dale died last September at the age of 53. He left a huge hole in a lot of lives.

Speaking of trying to figure out rules to a game, I don't have a clue about ice hockey. I'e been to three pro games and basically just wait for a fight to break out. Kind of like watching NASCAR just waiting for the big wreck.

Until they get rid of the pansy "charging" call, I will not look at basketball any longer. This is one of the stupidest rules of all sports. Standing like a girl (sorry to all you women sports fans) and waiting for someone to run into you. I say go ahead and stand there---if I run over you and get the basket, then I get the points. If you stop my progress, then no call and play continues...... Can you imagine a charging call in hockey or football? The officials would be laughed off the ice/field.

By the way, the best pro sport in the world is hockey. Love the fast action, the hits, the penalty rules, etc. There is a "targeting rule" but no charging. It is one of the purest pro sports.

In order to learn the rules of hockey, you need to take a life-long fan to a game. My wife and I learned the rules from 2 different NY fans. It's not a difficult game to figure out. The tricky rule is off-sides: an offensive player cannot cross the blue line (with both feet---one foot is ok) ahead of the puck. This keeps a team from stacking shooters in front of the opposing goalie. Hooking, cross-checking, tripping, etc are not too difficult to interpret. The one rule that still confuses me is interference. It seems like to me there is always some type of interference somewhere, but it's rarely called. Anyway, to learn the game's rules, go to more games.

I'm not going to bother trying to figure it out but thanks anyway. I live for college football. And golf even though I no longer play. I'm just waiting for the last day of The Master's. Last year was the first time I missed it in probably 20 years. On television of course. Not actually at The Master's. I've been to some big tournaments and watched the big guys play but The Master's is a hard ticket to get.
