Hello everyone, I'm looking for a camera to take on a trip to Alaska. To take pictures of fishing, hunting, wildlife and scenery. I do not want to take my my Nikon and lenses. Looking for something more compact with zoom capabilities that will take great pictures. Has anyone used or had a camera for that application. Any help is appreciated.

I used a Sony a6000 on a trip to Alaska and thoroughly enjoyed it. Light, compact, excellent image quality, and a good variety of lenses to choose from. Once you master the menu system and assign your most used settings to the customizable buttons and quick function menu on the back, shooting is fast and easy. I mostly use 16-70 and 55-210 zooms, but also carry 35mm and 12 mm primes. The a6000 is inexpensive -- if you have the budget, I suggest looking at the a6300 or a6500, both of which have more features and newer technology. A budget priority, though, should be getting the best lenses you can afford, and you'll need a good telephoto for your trip.

I own a Nikon D610, a Nikon D5500, a Nikon A900, a Nikon D60, a Sony A6000, a Canon SX 50 and a few other point and shoots. In the past three years my wife and I have taken our daughter, son-in-law and (now) 5 yr. old granddaughter to Florida twice and to our favorite dude ranch in N.Y. three times. Of all my cameras and lenses, I tend to reach for the Canon SX 50. No lens changes. I can shoot a bumble bee in macro or a can capture a beautiful shot of the moon. The lens is a 24-1200mm (35mm equivalent). The pictures that I take, especially of my granddaughter, are very important to me and I'm rarely disappointed with the outcomes. Since you're looking for "compact with zoom capabilities" you might want to consider the SX 50. And I think you'll find that the going prices for them are very easy on the wallet. Good luck and have a nice trip.

When you say, "more compact", do you mean fit in your shirt pocket size?

Based on my experiences in that part of our great country you are going to want as much lens reach as you can get. I suggest looking at P900, B700, SX60, or if pocket size, the Panasonic ZS 50, 60, 70 series. And if you go pocket size you will also appreciate having a view finder on the camera.

Have a great trip.

I love my Canon SX60. But bear in mind it simply doesn't have the IQ of a great DSLR. However, it is so lightweight, zooms fantastically, never a lens change, inexpensive, and does take great pictures as long as you aren't super-picky. For my big trip, I took my little and light Nikon D5500 for landscapes and such with the small 18-140 lens and also carried the SX60 for the awesome zoom capabilities for wildlife. I did have the best of both worlds and since they are both so light I didn't feel burdened while hiking. And you can always have your companion carry one camera and you the other. I have yet to find (and I've tried!) to find a perfect and small camera that can do it all for a reasonable price. Let us know what you go with!

Nikon D500 with the 200-500 lens.
My wife’s Sony a6000 with 50-210 lens is good and when wanting compact a6000 16-50 lens.

I am happy you made the decision to keep your BIGS at home. You will want to stay hands free for walking, hiking, and being active on your trip, but you also want sharp clean photo's with a telephoto element. I took three small's with me to Alaska, I will list them in order of use, the first two I put in a belt pouch, allowed me to move freely but still get great shots, the Sony HX90V has a 24-720 mm Zeiss T* lens, very sharp, has a pop up viewfinder (very helpful) and is sharp, sharp, sharp. My main inside shooting was with my very trusty Sony RX100 M2, 28-100 f1.8 Zeiss T* lens, both of these camera's fit into individual belt pouches that made it very easy to walk around with. For my wild life bus tour of Denali National park I took my little bigger Sony HX400V, 24-1200 Zeiss T*.You'll notice that all three camera's have the Zeiss T* lenses attached. The reason for this is they deliver great, sharp images. BUT IF I WERE DOING IT AGAIN I WOULD TAKE ONLY ONE, THE SONY HX90V.

Exactly my recommendation, the Sony super-zoom compacts are top quality. Cheers

Consider one of the Olympus OM-D micro 4/3s. I turned in all my Nikon gear for the M5 II and it has liberated me. The all around lens I use is the 14-150 II. Even if you add the pro wide angle and a 25 prime, you'll still have a compact and manageable kit. Consider renting. 5x internal stabilization, weather proofing a huge plus. And the image quality is great. Sounds like I should work for them, but I'm a 70-year old lady in Boston! I envy your trip.

Sony RX10IV if you have $1600 to spend. Great photos. But if a learning curve.

I have the Sony RX10 IV and it has great reach + pretty sharp. Very easy to customize to make it YOURS. Feels well constructed, though out.

Everyone is different, but when I went to Alaska last year I took a new Panasonic GH5 with 2 lenses. The 100-400 (800mm equiv.) was great for taking pictures of eagles and other birds at a distance. My favorite shots were the eagles fighting over the salmon carcasses on the beach. Of course I did both stills and video. I used the 12-60mm lens for walking around. Sample eagle video from our trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e49dOvDoQ2c
