Olympus, Leica, and Panasonic?

The O.I.S. in the Panasonic's Leica DG Elmarit 200mm f2.8 Power OIS will now work on the Olympus E-M1 mrII. I am wondering if this hints at the possibility that more lenses will cross over between systems?

Panasonic and Olympus have had a close association since they jointly introduced M43 ten years ago. The major difference in their systems at that time were IBS (Olympus) and OIS (Panasonic). Despite this, many photogs interchanged lenses between the two makes - especially in the early days, when less M43 lenses were available. Because of the pros and cons of IBS v OIS I believe that there will be more interchange, or dual IS.

Point aside.... Leica was one of the original projected partners of three, in the 4:3 consortium. Still heavily involved.

Yes - but the early Panasonic M43 lenses were not Leica branded - but I guess they were, in fact, made by Leica.

According to THIS ARTICLE, Leica lenses for m4/3 are made in Japan by Panasonic and with “strict quality assurance certified by Leica”

Fuji makes lenses for Hasselblad.
Sony makes Zeiss labeled lenses.
They’re all very good.

The days of universally questioning Japan's ability to manufacture precision and high quality products are long gone. They learned Mr. Deming's lessons well and added many strong improvements. It is quite a manufacturing culture.

Yes - I would not presume to doubt the precision manufacturing ability of Japan. However, through the years, a few manufacturers have risen to be recognised as outstanding - in different fields and in different countries. It is fitting that their "labels" should be sought after.

The standard that they have agreed to includes lenses. All m43 lenses can be used on any m43 body, period.

Essentially, Panasonic pays Leica to use the Leica brand name on its lenses.

In the end, it seems it's the money.
(I wouldn't expect them to do it for free!)
I was impressed by even the 'kit' lens on my Panny GX-1.
Moved to Olympus EM-1 and loved the IQ.
If it only had a Fuji menu system, I would still own it.
At 62, my brain can only handle a few systems.
