I don't use any of the 'high tech' photo editing. I shoot only in jpeg and other than cropping or some lightening or darkening, my photos are pretty much how they came out of the camera. I'm not going to say I never will, though.

This subject has been discussed several times on UHH, if you search you might find some.

It seems that all great photogs manipulate their images to taste. Even in the darkrooms with film they would dodge and burn and use other things to manipulate the image. Today, there is wide range of software allowing all to manipulate digital images. However, a bad picture that is photoshopped is still a bad picture. Photoshop can improve a good picture in several ways. But, lets not overcook the image wither.

A digital image has to be manipulated. There is more data then can be put into a viewable form. The question then becomes are you going to do it or let the camera make those choices for you?

I personally believe in doing as much as possible prior to photoshop. If I'm going to spend time working a photo I want to make a good image better not a mediocre image usable.

I have a motto 'keep it simple stupid'. Me not you.
I do minimal processing. More than I did in the darkroom, but not a whole lot more.
A little contrast here, a little exposure there, play with highlights, shadows, add/subtract saturation etc.
Pre Visualize/Expose for minimum Post Process.
For no Post Process???? And miss half the fun?

My personal experience is that there is a very large number of excellent photographers with wonderful equipment who take photos & never go into digital editing other than to sort and print. One of which is my son- in law. Aaron is a fantastic photographer with SLR, view camera and now a very top of the line DSLR. Two reasons he does so well - one is his equipment and the other is he is just so darn brilliant - remembers and uses every bit of knowledge he has ever learned about photography. If I had not been on several photo trips with him I would think what I said was all made up.
Trust me when I say there are many like you but I'm not one of them.

Post some of your works, I would like to see some.

I don't use much editing software at all. I only do it when it has to be used as I prefer the old fashioned way of photography more.

Even Ansel Adams didn't get it to his satisfaction right out of the camera. Between all his "burning and dodging" there was a significant amount of time spent post processing.

I think there is nothing wrong with post processing to get the image you want. Several of my photo club friends "go to extreems" with 4 or more post processing programs and they end up with images that look more like paintings than photographs. It makes them happy and their final images look great.

While we live in the digital age, its really good to see so many 'Purist' photographers, me included. Yes I have photoshop, yes I use it ocassionally, but as many here have said, I try and get as much right at the time of shooting the image as I can. I think many of us want to be good photographers, not good manipulators, so keep using what you learn, and keep learning through applying what you know and what you experience. To me it appears there are many photographers out there who are artists more than photographers. They are very good at post production stuff and the images look bright, vibrant, enticing, but its not real, nice but not real. While I have one foot gently in that camp, my other foot has most of my weight on it and thats in the recording reality camp, that of the photographer, not the manipulator :)

Whether you like/believe in it or not, with digital cameras there is always PP alterations going on. This is done in-camera according to the cameras base parameters - which are usually set by the cameras manufacturer.

If you're quite content with letting someone else do all of your PP for you then you'll be happy with SOOC shots. However (harking back to film days) this is akin to taking your shots and sending your film to someone else to process.

But a discerning photographer would be far from happy with such an arrangement and would want to process the shots themselves, so if you like to retain control from beginning to end so the end result is ALL your own work then you'll want to use PP software.

I have read good arguments on both sides. But I love to play with a photograph to try to get the best out of it. I have five photo editing programs and all have some little feature that the others don't have. This is my hobby and it gives me great pleasure to fool around with a photo. If you don't care for post processing, that's fine. Enjoy what you do, I hope you get perfect composition and exposure every time you click the shutter. Hooray for photography!

Most photographs need just a wee touch of adjustment and this can be achieved by using the basic functions of a free programme from “Google”, called “Picasa”. It is non-destructive and never touches your originals in your pictures folder. It is simple to lighten, darken and sharpen in this program. I have used it successfully for many years, winning trophies at my local club with my images.
