Personally, I think the proposed book cover looks a little flat and I know you have much better surfing photographs than the one you are proposing.
The surfer should be coming straight at you with lots of bold surf swirling around.
Just my thoughts though.

Thanks Leicaflex for your thoughts. I think you are on to something there with your creative ideas.

I think I'd use "Surf's Up" as my title and I'd remove a lot of the foam as it fights with the main subject. Just my opinion.

Thank you for your suggestions DragonsLady. It's interesting to me each of my UHH friends opinions are different yet all have merrit.

Brent The book must be great from what you share with us,and the water in the shot pulls it together for me. Thanks

There is another UHH member that has taken a few of my surf photos and put together a slideshow to music. His name is Dick Ryerson and did a very nice job with what he had to work with. Yesterday I sent him a flash drive with about 200 of my better surf photos and he wants to do more slide shows with them. When he finishes up the slide shows, I will give UHH the links to show what can be done with the photos and music. I have not really been planning on creating a surf book, but you might be onto something chasmith! Thanks!

nice job. As a creative director, I always instruct designers to go over their layouts and ask themselves, which elements are not absolutely needed, then take a hard look at whether any fall into that list add or distract from the overall composition and subject. In this case, i think the yellow rule would fall into that realm. It's your book, but I'd suggest printing out a copy with and without, put it on a wall, then decide in a couple days which one works best for you.

Thanks very much spraguead for your thoughts on this cover. I had a cube that said "good design is what's left after all irrelevance has been parred away". I think it's similar to what you have mentioned here. I am putting both ideas next to each other for you to decide which is the best design. Thanks spraguead.

Hi Brent, just saw your update w/o the yellow framing. You might also try creating a smooth blend/transition of the surfing image into the seafoam background. This might be more consistent with the seafoam lettering. The sharp transition was a little hard on my eyes. At least until until I took my glasses off, then everything was soft. LOL. Just thinking...

Thanks Mike for your thoughts on this. Maybe you should keep your glasses off so it doesn't hurt your eyes! We don't want any eye damage going on here! lol

Interesting idea Brent... here's my two penneth. I would remove the foam from the sky so it becomes definitely a sky. And Whiten the "title" foam to distinguish it more from the rest. Just my thoughts, and I guess you could go on forever here.
