Here are three images for your review.
1. Original image with no pping.
2. Original image with photo shop and NIK pping
3. HDR image

The point of this post is to show you can use your normal pping tools and software and make an image with high contrast to look fairly decent, without having to use HDR. Still, my own choice is to use HDR in the field along with capturing the best images I can without it.

Your thoughts are welcome.

Excellent restraint show in your HDR post processing. Excellent.

From a science standpoint, remember, our eyes have a far FAR wider dynamic range then the best DSLR. So post with HDR goal is so very logical.

Really nice presentation. Your HDR image is by far the most pleasing for me.

Thanks. My preference is the hdr image, too. Still, if you don't have hdr, there are ways to improve your images. What software do you use?

I use Affinity and just getting into Topaz. My wife has informed me that she is giving me the complete Topaz package for my birthday. Just looked at the date and realized that will be tomorrow.

I think the HDR does a better job of enhancing the color in the scene, especially of the pine/spruce trees. I’ve been enjoying your comparative photo displays, keep it up.

The HDR image is by far the best one IMO. You definitely did not overprocess it at all. Nice job.

I use Tony Kuyper's luminosity masking software...

Excellent job on #3. Not overblown at all, and very good recovery of detail from the shadows.

This is the way HDR should be where the viewer may not even guess that it was hdr.

The HDR looks good. It's a bit warmer and the shadows show more detail. Good use of the technique. Most users over-push the saturation making it look cartoonish. I have Photomatix but never use it. I prefer Lightroom's HDR to get similar results to yours. I don't want to look at an image and be able to tell it's HDR. I just want to see a good looking image.
