Point&Shoot Camera

Yes, I know that I am posting an image in the Discussion Section. This is a Proof of Concept, and I wanted it to reach people other than those who compulsively look at every image in the Gallery.

I took the picture with an old iPhone - one that was retired in December 2015 when we switched from AT&T to Verizon. When my iPhone died a few months ago, I tried to get Verizon to put this back in service for me, but they say they cannot reactivate former AT&T phones .... but it turns out to still be a good camera. After taking the picture, I got around the sealed nature of iPhones by using WiFi to transfer the image up to the cloud, and then from the cloud down to this computer.

Sometimes we get questions here from someone wanting a new Point&Shoot camera. If the person already has a smart phone, then s/he already has an adequate P&S camera - my suggestion is that someone who doesn't have a smart phone could purchase a deactivated phone cheaply and then use it as described in the second paragraph here.

note: Thanks to Velcro, our nearly 15-year-old-cat, who did the un-cat-like thing of staying in place and even looking at, instead of away from, the camera.

Adequate yes, good no. My daughter took some pics of our new puppy with her iphone and sent them to me. About as good as your pic above, but nothing like what you can get with a good camera.

I took this picture in Italy with Point and Shoot Panasonic Camera Lumix DMC-ZS19.
This camera really made the difference than my wife's older IPHONE 5.

See my comment to Sharp Shooter regarding small pocket cameras:

A great flower photo I took yesterday is 15 mp and could stand a lot of cropping before losing definition. It was taken with a Sony HX50 which is a 20 mp camera. The camera fits into a pocket.

iPhone cameras are great, when you don’t have a better camera with you. The limitations are considerable, used P&S cameras, even good ones are small and even cheaper.

Wonderful images can certainly be achieved with an iPhone camera. But a dedicated camera (even a simple pocket camera) does offer features either not available at all with phone cameras, or only available through cumbersome add-on apps or attachments. The ideal point & shoot camera should be hassle-free.

I spent a week in Chicago in 2010. At the time I had a Blackberry phone and hadn't really even thought much about the fact it had a built-in camera ... I wasn't at all into photography YET. The pictures I got with the Blackberry were so lousy it depresses me to look at them now. At the time though, I thought it was the best thing going!! My mom was from Chicago and I was able to get pictures of so many of the things she talked about all my life. That trip was what got me into photography. It didn't take me long to figure out the Blackberry wasn't the best camera - not even really a good camera. Just better than nothing at all. My girlfriend's daughter gave me a $100.00 Kodak she had used for a photography class in high school. It took way better pictures than the Blackberry. Later I bought a Canon SX50 Powershot. The 50X zoom really gets me some pictures I couldn't get any other way - Ships at sea, birds in trees way out in a field etc. I've actually even sold some pictures on a couple websites I've got on. I'm about to buy a DSLR with a good telephoto lens. Not sure which one yet. The Blackberry was a painfully low-quality camera but it was enough to jump start me into photography and there are way better cell phone cameras out there. My cell phone camera I own now is one of those but it's still just a cell phone camera. The thing I miss most is the fact I always have my phone on me so I always had a camera too. Now I have to either make a point to carry a camera or settle for the cell phone camera and I just can't do it. I got spoiled by my Canon. The picture on top is Sears Tower taken with my Blackberry. On the bottom is a shrimp boat out in the Atlantic Ocean taken from the beach in Daytona with my Canon SX50
