I have two computers that I use, a desktop at home and a laptop for traveling. Both run win 10. Both have the latest version of Nikon Capture NX-D plus the desktop also has PSE 2018 and PSP 9x. I can edit the raw files on the laptop but not on the desktop. Both computers will edit raw files from my other camera bodies. I called Nikon last Monday but they were unable to solve the problem over the phone and said they would look into it and get back to me. I still have not heard back from them and will contact them again tomorrow. In the meantime, if anybody has any ideas on whats causing the problem, I'm all ears.

First make sure your software has the latest updates. Secondly Windows computers can be quite buggy I have found over the years and programs can become corrupt because there should be no difference between computers. Only other thing I can think of is the computers must have the Ram and CPU to process the large amount of memory these files and associated programs can use and place on system resources. I also own an Apple iMac and MacBook pro. I never have the problems that Windows computers create and do not have the programs you have not work between the computers. Maybe that is the reason artists and photographers have been turning more and more to Apple. I hope this helps, good luck.

Ya ya, we know; we have all heard how artists and photographers are moving to Apple. I've been hearing that since my dinosaur succumbed to old age. The funny part is that more people are using Windows machines than ever before, including artists and photographers. Mostly because Windows machines are far more powerful and customizable at a fraction the price.

To repeat - make sure you have Nikon's latest download. You have to download a new codex to your computer with each upgrade of NEF files.

Download a free trial copy of On1 Raw - see if it works - costs you nothing just to try to diagnose the problem.

Also consider downloading a free trial copy of Lr and Ps. Both programs are aggressively updated and are likely to be able to process the D850 files. Using PSE 2018 with D850 files is like putting a set of four space saving spare tires on a Corvette. Yes, it will certainly work, but . . .

Lastly, if you insist on using PSE, then you should download the latest Adobe Camera Raw for all machines where you intend to edit D850 files. You need ACR 9.12.1.

This doesn't matter if you are in editing software that supports the files from the camera. It will only affect software to view provided by Microsoft, as well as being able to see the previews in thumbnail view.

Nonsense. Just because you have and like your Apple computer doesn't make you qualified to diagnose a problem on a PC, and suggest that the OP ought to get a more stable platform - aka a Mac.

I support both platforms, and I get more problems with Apple users per capita than with Windows. The biggest problems occur when either MS or Apple issues an OS update. Also support for old printers and other peripherals is pretty thin with Apple's OS. I have several students and photographers that I tutor that are using older, otherwise functional Canon Photo printers, and the latest Apple OS update does not support them. They work fine on Win10. But this is not a measure of how good or bad each OS platform is. I am just relating my personal experience.

I have never heard of a program "becoming corrupt" because of an OS. Ever. Do you have any notion what you are talking about?

The OP's problem is likely due to not having the latest editing software updates, not a fundamental platform issue, which you are convinced is the problem, without taking the time to try and understand what is going on.

There is even a current post on UHH about a Canon scanner that doesn't work with Apple's latest OS.

The latest version of Adobe Camera Raw supports Nikon D850 NEF files - check your version of Elements to make sure its updated. However, one workaround that will get you running immediately is to view the files in Nikon NX-D or View, and then export the ones you want to work on as TIFFs.

Check out your Graphics Card. Often photo processing software uses the Graphic Card (GPU). I had to upgrade my laptop to get a better graphics card so Lightroom and Photoshop would work better. I do not know if the software you're using depends on the GPU, but this would be a good place to check.

Unless you use your system for interactive gaming, most likely you do not pay attention to the graphics card (I know I did not.)
