Hi
I'm heading to Big Bend National Park week after next.
Any tips from members?
I'd mostly be interested in birds and flowers.

The short hike into Santa Elena Canyon is definitely worth the hike. NPS says 'Moderate' but its not really moderate, more like easy, about a half mile in about as far as you can go and the trail ends. The only problem maybe crossing the mudflat leading to the trail. If it hasn't rained, then its not to much of a problem. Truly beautiful once you get into the canyon.
Lots of birds and other critters near the Chisos Mountain Lodge, stop there for lunch, great views also. Also don't miss the Sam Nail Ranch Trial, easy hike, about a half mile loop and good for history & birds. Old windmill still working and the original pecan tree(s) are still there.
PS, If you're staying in or around Alpine, TX, consider a night tour of McDonald Observatory just outside Ft Davis. Their Star Parties are great, they have schedules on line.
BB....Great place, we loved it. Enjoy.
While you're there, you should consider a raft trip down the Santa Elena Canyon. Google it, and you will find a lot of pictures and info.

How did you know I was looking for the “easy” hikes.
