i was hit by a rogue wave (4'+ water on a long flat beach!) and momentarily tumbled underwater, so both camera and zoom lens had brief immersion in salt water - can either of these be salvaged? best solution would be someone who could do the work themselves, rather than sending our for repair

any suggestions?

Junk it. Salt never stops.

thanks all for the quick replies!

i did most of the recommended steps - battery removal, rinse, rice, etc, but mostly you've confirmed my thoughts that the camera's a goner. looks like there's some hope for the lens (tamron zoom for sony)

I think it is now a nice looking paperweight. But do let us know the outcome, and good luck!

I have photography gear-specific insurance for Professionals (Front Row Insurance) on my gear for this exact sort or accident. It costs about $200 per year, and covers just about every situation. Any damage from impact, water, theft, left it on the park bench, etc., is covered. They also cover pro's on location, covers lost income, rentals, loss of data, computers, insurance for penalties resultant from the shoot, liability coverage, and other situations. I am in Canada.

You could also get a homeowners "rider" policy for the equipment, but it won't have the same broad coverage.

About 15 years ago I was hit with a rogue wave as you have. I was using a Canon G3 point and shoot camera. I did the power off, remove battery and chip and dry off process then sent it to Canon in Costa Mesa CA for a repair estimate. They reported it repairable, kept it a week and I presume, disassembled it and cleaned it thoroughly. In any case I hauled it for a year and then had it converted it to IR operation and have been using it for IR imaging ever since. Still OK.

The camera does not even have to be dunked in salt water. A couple of years ago my D7000 stopped working and I took it to a repairman. He found salt water corrosion inside that could not be repaired, but the camera had never been immersed in water or even seriously rain-soaked. I had been to the Normandy beaches in 2015 and I assume that salt air got into the camera when I was there. I bought a D7100 as a replacement. The original 18-200VR zoom lens is a little gritty in its operation, but still functional. I kept it as a spare but bought the newer VR2 lens to be my prime.

Basically what I've been saying.

But there is absolutely NO harm in trying.
Sounds like enough success stories to give it a go.
Shellback’s process sounds like a fighting chance!!!
If you have more money than time, throw it in the garbage!

Salt water.....NO!! I've had two camera's go under! Forget about it and move on. You will have nothing but problems down the road. Take the unfortunate opportunity and go for an upgrade!! Salt water will screw up a free lunch!! Bolton

I absolutely agree!
It seems many people give up WAY too easily, without even bothering to at least try. And then there are others who all to gladly feed into that pessimistic attitude with their input.

Lived on Jersey shore for a number of years late teens to mid 30's with Minolta xg7 then xg9 then x700. Moved to florida back in 93. Went didgital. A couple years later thought I'd try film again pulled out Minoltas put batteries in them nothing dead. Took them to shop opened up corrosion everywhere. Never dunked them maybe some morrning dew type of moisture just took alot of ocean/beach pics over the years. That's all it took just exposure to the salt.

Rook, you obviously haven't dealt with saltwater much have you?? Reality isn't pessimism when it's true. Is it really worth the time, money, downtime and headaches trying to see of something 'may' work when percentages are not in your favor at all?

I would have advised maybe painting is a better hobby.

I found this info very useful at the same time I hope I never need to know. I also suspect exactly what is going to happen if I wade in to any water body since I have this new info to draw from.

actually i wasnt even wading - tide was going out, i was on a rocky bench about 1' above a wide, exposed sandy beach stretching a long way in each direction; i saw the wave coming in and figured it would run as some others had - covering my sandals to the ankle; but this time after passing me, it rebounded and must have curled after hitting a 3' shelf behind me, quickly coming up over my waist and knocking me over. i was only under a few seconds and water receded quickly - the beach had a lot of people nearby, out about the same distance as me and none of them even noticed what had happened

i did have insurance ($35/yr rider on home) and replaced w latest model; my question was to see if anyone might be interested in trying to salvage it
