ADVISE PLEASE
15 years ago we started photographing new members, events, and scanning pictures and documents in the history of our Church. 200 years old, end of 2019 and the powers to be requested we do a slide show of these pics and offer sets of CDs.
PROBLEM: 1) Scanning's are in dated folders, year, and then start with number 0001
2) Pics are in dated folders, year, sub folders, event, and start with 0001
Next to impossable to make a slide show? Without writing a long batch file referring to each folder and sub w/splash screen of year. At 5 seconds a pic = about 40 hours of viewing?
BIG PROBLEM (77 years old and can't run fast anymore)

Mose listened to his Father in Law about Delegating the Work Load. He set up Chieftains of 10's , 50's, and 100's.
If it worked for him, why not do the same. Assign a few younger more tech savvy men to do your leg work with you in oversight.

You need to get some clarification. Ask them if they want a 40-hour slideshow. Most likely they will only want a 10-minute slideshow, and you only need to select 120 of the most relevant pictures/events. You'll probably cut down your workload by 90% and produce a much better final product.

I agree with Jesu S, that the huge number of photos needs to be reduced, an editing job that can and should be delegated to a team dedicated to completing the job. With that much material to work with, and patience to match, I'll bet they come up with a heck of a slideshow.

There are programs to put slide shows together and you don't want all pics in there only a subset that reflects the important aspects of the 200 years. The programs will allow narration if you want, background music, etc. I did one for my mother's 500 pics and it came out great and was about 40 minutes long. I think you can cut it back to 3 seconds a pic.
Anyway, just my thoughts.

There are several issues that pop up. Who is the historian of your group? Who were involved in pushing the project and to where did they disappeared? Surely you are not the sole proprietor of the project. What of the prior 185 years? How many in "we started"? How many in "we are continuing"? And what about the multitudes of potential copyright conflicts?

One possible path would be to declare the whole project to be "devil's work". That is the byline of the many that became "the powers that be".

Find a good old Marine DI, retired. Give him the job of garnering volunteer recruits.

As far as your legs, they did their work. It is time to for passing the torches (not just torch!) to the younger "legs".

Tell the recruits that this is how they can earn brownie points for their time in heaven.

Since it is sorted by year delegate a decade to each member of your team.

Get a pic count for each year and go from there.
Probably most of the pics were from the last 50 years. So start with the 1st 150 years and choose best 5 pics for each year

If you do 3 second you have 20 pics a min or 1200 pics an hour
If you do 5 seconds you have 12 pics a min or 720 pics in an hour

Consider creating several slides shows and combining.

Fear not, all it takes is a bit of time so you'd better get started.

Hopefully you have a good post editor. Just rename each image with that and store the end result in an appropriate file!

Count on a few hours being you have a gazillion photos but that will cut the time considerably from the 40 hours you mentioned.

I often find myself with two cameras and two times recorded on the images. When I want everything to be chronologically correct, (within a minute), I load and rename the images based on the recorded time. Except for a few extra minutes, all ends up well for the output file. (My RAW images still have the incorrect time though.)


***Side note:
I have to thank you also! Two of my cameras are automatically switched from savings time and back and my other is not. Several times I use two cameras and one just might be the one that doesn't change at least not until I manually change it. So not I'll have to change things this Sunday back to savings time.
*(Anyone else that needs to change should do so also!)


You can do similar and just keep the renamed files where you feel fit to put them. That will also help out everything for the "next" time.

Come on, you took and kept all those photos because you have an interest in the church and its history. You will love doing the project but you do have to get your game plan set. I would get a good program like Pinnacle Studio 21 that lets you put your photos on a track at any interval you want and you can use music on a track for background or use the voice over function to narrate portions or use both. You will need to go through your file and determine the number of photos you can use without maxing the 4.7 GB DVD max storage limit. Speak to the parties making the request to find the most desired theme and select photos to match. Once you put as many as you desire on the DVD, there are a number of places that duplicate DVDs and even do personal printing of the folders. Let the church pay for the printing and duplication for any quantity desired and be the hero!

Some how you need to be very specific with your slide shows (Lightroom and other programs will allow you to do this providing you spend time keywording the photos).

Perhaps, you might start with, our pastors (ministers, fathers, or what ever is the appropriate term for your church) over the years.I'm not sure exactly how to do this with the data you have, but the critical thing is to make many different slide show each of which applies only to one aspect. Suggestion as to what aspects to include might be, and this depends on your specific demononation might include: Our religious leaders through the years, congregation leaders through the years, Christmas programs through the years, or something else.

The bottom line is that you might have to provide numerous themes and dedicate each slide show to a particular theme. Lightroom can help because of the way it allows you to use and display keywords. However, you do have to define you keywords. I'm sure there are other applications that do something similar but I am only familar with Lightroom.

Ir will take a lot of work on your part, but however you do it, making 200 years of photographs into a slide presentation will not be a trivial job.
