Lightroom Classic/Nikon D850/DNG Files

The D850 will not load DNG files from my D850 into LR 5. The DNG converter seems to be the only solution. I do not want to use the converter, but rather upgrade to a LR classic (stand alone) version that will accept the D850 & DNG files. I thought the LR 6 with update 6.13 would be the solution, but I am told today from a high profile IT employee at a high profile photo company that it will not work. So, what do I do? I am not a techy person and I need a correct solution. I get conflicting answers from all sources I have researched. I will buy whatever is necessary to resolve the problem. Thanks for responding.

Your D850 does not shoot DNG files, its Raw format is .nef

LR 5 is very old and no longer supported and will not load Raw files from any recent camera.

Have you tried removing the storage chips from the camera and using them to upload from. Older computers and newer cameras seem not to like each other. Since the storage card will have the images as either .nef or .jpg you can just use the memory card to upload. You usually get .dng in Adobe once you have saved the raw image from editing the raw image.

Well, there is no 'stand-alone' offering any longer. To get Lightroom, we must subscribe to Creative Cloud. It's only $9.99/month, or you can pay annually. With the subscription, your LR installation stays current perpetually. As does the copy of Photoshop you get with the subscription.

You don't need dng files. Actually, dng files are far from universal - few non-adobe software packages can read them.

The more permanent - and correct - solution is to subscribe to Lightroom Classic and Photoshop - $120/yr, which includes all updates and upgrades. It reads native D850 files without needing to convert them to dng, and it is not a dead-end solution like a standalone version of Lightroom. In the process, you also get a very powerful and complete set of image editing tools (Photoshop) to use when you have done all that you can in Lightroom.

I've been a subscriber for 3 yrs and the sky has not fallen on me, and I have saved a bundle over the cost of the old way - buy Ps and Lr, and update them - for a fee - periodically. At $10/mo, there isn't a better deal out there.

Good deal only if you re-new it yearly. I think the creators of these programs are ripping us off by going to no "Stand alone programs" but then again they deal up with Microsoft and the little guy suffers because every few years you need to upgrade to a new computer to even go online. The throw away society we live in is causing the health of our planet problems.

I should have mentioned that upgrading to Lr 6.13 only costs $79 + tax. For those of us who are hobbyists and don’t need the latest and greatest monthly upgrade, the stand alone version is more cost effective. I used Lr 5 for at least 4 years if not 5 and would have kept going if not for an upgrade in cameras.

If you are cynical, of course. Perpetual license programs were a pain in the butt. It was often many weeks, if not months before new cameras and lenses were fully supported, and you had to pay for upgrades. CS6 Extended cost $1000 to purchase, or $150 to upgrade. The price of Lightroom 6 is $150, or $80 if you are upgrading from a previous version. Given the $1150 price of stand alone Ps and Lr together - both of which are destined to be orphans soon - it would take me 9 1/2 yrs of $120/yr payments to exceed the cost of the perpetual licensed software, even if I never upgraded it. Over the past 3 yrs I have paid $360 for Lr/Ps - about 1/3 what I paid for CS6 and LR 3. You must be bad at math or history or both - to feel you are being "ripped off."

I just went on line to resolve a networking issue in my home yesterday, and I used an old Toshiba laptop that had Windows XP on it. It must be at least 15 yrs old. MS support for XP ended in 2014. It worked just fine, and it's CD/DVD drive still functions. My current desktop computer is a 6 yr old Intel i7-2600K clocked at 5 ghz, 32 gb ram, with 12 tb storage and a 1 tb SSD for a system drive. It also cranks along quite quickly - besting all but the newest, fastest computers with m.2 NVMe boot drives. Every few years to even go online? Not even close.

No one is getting screwed here other than those who insist they are getting screwed by adopting new software distribution methods (cloud, faster) and payment (subscription, cheaper).

I did this process this week (March 2018), using my historical LR5 purchase and going to the Adobe website and purchasing an upgrade to the stand-alone version of LR6. After downloading, installing, checking for updates and installing them too, I'm now at v6.14. Looking at the Adobe site, the OP's D850 is supported by LR6 as of v6.13. Assuming the LR5 software is properly licensed, buying an upgrade to a stand-alone copy of LR6 is a viable option.

The 'upgrade' is actually a new software installation. The price is reduced representing an upgrade to the previously licensed software.

to the OP: I'd probably trust what I could read on Adobe's website rather than what someone told me ...

Strictly speaking thats not true, the last update was around xmas to lightroom 6. You can still buy it from adobe but adobe chose to make lightroom 7 on the rental plan. There is also a free lightroom version that can be downloaded for mobile.

You are correct, of course, but if I was looking for a software title to acquire, I would want the latest version. Speaking for myself. TurboTax 2006 wouldn't help me much this year.
