I never seem to be completely satisfied with the sharpness of my wildlife images.
Nikon d4, 500nikkor afs 4.0
ISO 800, 1/160 @ 6.3 Egret in deep shade
Sharpened in LR @ 73/.9/25
Gitzo 1325 w/RRS BH-55 LR
I'm hoping that this lens/camera combo does not need some focus adjustment.
The depth of field is relative shallow which is to expected with a long lens and large aperture. The subject itself, egret, looks good.
For birds use a shutter speed of at least 1/400 sec.
I think the sharpness on the wing feathers is spot on.
It mai seem like a chore, but that lens should do better. Can you fine tune the D4? It's not that hard, at least to check it.
You have an excellent shot. The exposure is good, the birds is well posed and in breeding colors, and you caught a lovely reflection! As to sharpness, it looks good to me, even enlarged. Could it be better, I don’t honestly know but I would NEVER look at this and say “wow, it would be great if the focus was better”! Extremes at high magnification don’t necessarily make a photo better.
I think I see in your descriptive the you sharpened in LR?? How can we tell iff the original is sharp
The bird looks sharp.
I really don't care if it's sharp - I like it - great image. I guess I'm a gourmand rather than a gourmet.
Thanks guys. Maybe I'm just too critical of my images. I hope that's it rather than an auto focus problem.
Looks good to me. Maybe the light is a little soft but the image is certainly sharp enough.
To me, it looks sharp but SOFT... I am playing with apertures and finding that different lenses have "sweet spots" that have less softness. Looking at the 6.3 aperture setting, I'd try a few images at f/8-f/11 and see if you have better luck. I think that you just have a shallow DOF. The feathered feathers (????) look tack sharp to me. Overall a GREAT image!!
I like it...I am only critical of mine....But living for 26 years in Florida have more white bird images than I care but I am a photographic hoarder.,...Its nice....
Thanks to each of you for taking the time and effort to assist me.
