I agree. They differed on Iran, North Korea, Russia and several other top issues. Not taking sides either way, if you are not in sync with your boss, you ain't going to last. The problem is not whether the termination was warranted, but the public way that Trump undermined Tillerson and how he was fired. Tillerson is not without criticism, either. He apparently was detested by State Department staffers because he virtually insulted them at every turn. The whole mix of those two seemed to be toxic.
