Plan a full day at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and confirm the morning and / or afternoon times for the raptor demonstration. The west side of Saguaro NP at sunset is wonderful, particularly around Signal Hill. The grounds of the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun Historic District are also amazing as is the artwork in the gallery.

Super! Just the kind of info I was hoping for. Can I take a tripod to the raptor demo.

I've been there once and if you make it all day and there's two sessions, consider the following. There's an elevated patio overlooking where the birds fly. I didn't shoot there but I saw others setting-up with tripods and longer lenses. The demonstration occurs at a lower elevation where the birds fly over and nearly through a group of people. In the crowd there's no tripod option and they ask you not to raise your camera / long lens above your head given how close the birds are flying above the people. A tripod is welcome and useful for close-ups of all the cactus, flowers, etc.

Some UHH members will see my response as just another wise-guy comment from Ralph. But honest to God, anywhere in Tucson is a good location. Lived there more than eight years and loved every morsel of Tucson and its environs. Good Tucson guidebooks abound, start with Arizona Highways magazine and their related publications. A family crisis forced me to return reluctantly to metro Chicago. Enjoy your trip...I’m envious.

Now, now, Ralph. Not everyone is capable of thinking for themselves, you know!

you could probably take a tripod but the viewing area consists of two areas, divided by a railing; raptors on each side at intervals, so that each group will get some good shots; really too crowded ( and discourteous ) toi try to set up a tripod; you can handhold for good shots; went twice in two days when I was visiting; if you took not hing but a cell phone camera you would get some nice shots - you can almost reach out and touch them; if I remember correctly, the session start at 10 and 2, and, last about 20 minutes; the raptors that appear are not necessarily the same at each session, nor, each day,

seeing oval52's response is bringing back my recollection, and, he is correct; those raptors fly virtually between people and at hat level

If memory serves me, there is a huge airplane "graveyard" west and north of Tuscon... I don't even know if it is open to the public, but if so, you could get some interesting photos there.

This Harris Hawk flew in right between myself and the person next to me. He was so low and fast that most of the people near me ducked.

If you're into birds, go to the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch - we've never seen so many different species (65 by our count) in one place. Another beautiful place is the Boyce-Thompson State Park less than an hour away. Beautiful desert gardens with spectacular rock bluffs. $13 admission but worth it - take the free tour at 11 and great educated about the desert.

First thing to know is that Tucson is HUGE. The Catalina Mountains sit on the NE side of town. The Catalina Highway is a scenic (really scenic) ride to the top of Mt. Lemon. It's a 15-20 mile ride with lots of pull offs and scenic overviews with parking and rest room facilities. It's about a half hour drive nonstop. We've been up there several times. And every time it takes us 3-4 hours just because every turn is prettier than the last and we HAVE to stop for Photos. In the days of film I would have gone bankrupt. Take a jacket. If it's warm in town you'll be surprised how cold it gets with elevation. Also take water with you everywhere you go. Hydrate. Have fun.
Footnote: Put Lemon Mountain in your GPS and make sure that it's not taking you to the Park. They're not remotely the same place. You can also plug in Catalina Highway.
