Watch out for california drivers.
Wow. Obviously they do not drive in large Florida cities too much!
At least New Mexico didn't make the list. I guess drunk-driving is our only bad driving habit.
I like to drive fast, but not in congested traffic. I couldn't believe how fast traffic goes on California's congested expressways. I never saw any police trying to slow it down, either, like here in Texas. Yes, California drivers are crazy. And then they're so concerned about pollution. Well, you pollute much more at higher speeds!!
It will not make it go away.
Well as to Rhode Island being the best drivers - leave your driveway and by the time you are up to 45 mph you are in another state. Hard to be a bad/dangerous driver, at least in state.
As to California, many years ago I read an article (Parade Magazine in the Sunday paper???? I think) by a retired Ca Highway Patrol officer who was a consultant on traffic etc saying that from personal observation he rated the regular long distance commuters in the Los Angeles Metro Area as the over all best drivers in the country. Just from experience. I know in my case I regularly did 1000 miles a month just going to and from work and shopping on the weekend.
Yes, he did factor in their ability to handle the Speed Racer and Bumper Car style drivers or the newbies. On my routes I could always tell when a new subdivision East of me started to sell large numbers of homes. The new commuters messed up the traffic flow as they learned the patterns and started to fit in. Now on the rare times I am on the freeways during "rush hour" I have noticed that the Speed Racers and Bumper Car style types are now more numerous but overall the vast majority of the drivers are still very good.
He did have one warning for the commuters, and I had it happen to me, it was scary. You got the pattern down so pat that you started to go on "auto pilot" without thinking much. Several times I arrived at school or home (44 miles one way driveway to parking next to my classroom) and could remember almost nothing of the trip in between. So I started to listen to a talk station that gave short traffic reports every 10 minutes and a longer one every hour. That kept my mind on driving and the freeways (yes, we call them freeways, not expressways). I did miss my music, but I had my mind back where it belonged - on my driving.

October 1980 - transferred from Mayport Florida to Moffett Field (Mtn View) California - National speed limit set by the feds for fuel conservation was still 55. Got pulled over for obstructing traffic on I-5 for doing 55. Was told to go with the flow of traffic - doesn't matter if it's 40 or 80 - stay with the mainstream. Also discovered that when they turn on a blinker, they are telling you they are changing lanes - they are not asking permission to come into your lane. Another adjustment was the motorcycles on the white lines - seems they come out of nowhere and go by you. Definitely gets your attention when in a traffic jam. At a squadron safety stand-down, we were told by a state trooper not to open a door to try to stop them or slow them down - other than being illegal, people can get hurt - namely the car driver when the biker stops and kicks his butt
The other thing interesting was what they were doing while commuting - fixing and eating breakfast - crossword puzzles, shaving, putting on makeup, reading books, etc. - kind of explains why there were multiple car crashes instead of one or two vehicles involved... Glad I'm out of there...
Many, many times, going into LA, I have seen women putting on their makeup, men and women reading the morning news, or some presentation they are giving when they get to work....Scary stuff....
man, I have something to look forward to then; being from Queensland, Australia. as going to L.A .in August this year, the first time.should be interesting. for an old fart like me.

You have even more to watch out for if you drive on the Proper English side of the road. Remember, we rebelled and started doing things OUR way. Good luck to you. And may the angels watch over you.
I tend to agree with that study, however I think it is unfair to blame an entire state for a single city in said state for having bad drivers. Is it fair to blame California for L.A? Georgia for Atlanta? Illinois for Chicago? or Texas for Dallas?

Massachusetts may not be on the worst list but Boston certainly is the worst place I've driven, and I have driven in 45 of the lower states. It is the only place where drivers hijack the roads! If you come to an intersection where there is a left hand turn lane and you want to go straight, it is an all-out pedal to the metal dash to see who get to the center of an intersection first. If the car turning left gets there first, there will be a bumper to bumper line of cars turning in front of the car going straight. Never mind the rule of straight or the right hand vehicle has the right of way. They will continue the left hand train until the light changes and only the first single car going straight will get through the light! I hate driving in Boston more than driving in downtown Manhattan!

I'd like to get in an argument in favor of Massachusetts drivers as worst in the country.
We held the title of highest per-capita number of traffic accidents of any state, until
we lost it to Rhode Island. Now we're only #2. I refer to our drivers as "ignorant scofflaws."
Either they don't know the laws, or ignore them if they do.
