I retired to Rome 4 years ago from New York. I find it safer here than NY. As for pickpockets avoid the 64 bus. On the metro just pay attention.

A wide lens is key. My walk around l use an 18-300. Plan on not using a flash in most places.

My second choice is the 10-17mm. Rome can be tight and you can only back up so far😁

You can walk to the majority of the most popular sights and thus weight becomes a factor.

Enjoy your trip.....

I'm sure others will answer your technical questions but some advice: if you have an interest in some of the fantastic museums, go on line and get tickets ahead of time to avoid waiting to buy them. It can be quite crowded. There may also be a "pass" ticket which will save you money and let you in ahead of the lines.

Just a random thought: This would be a good opportunity, and a logical reason, to get a backup camera for your Nikon that would serve you well on this special trip. I am thinking of the B700??

My first thought when I read the OP was, how many responses 'til someone suggests buying another camera? Never fails.

Really depends on what you like to shoot. I like architectural details and street people so the long lens is a must, but for those who like the big views, leave it at home.

Cinque Terre is great but too far from Rome; you can't see Rome in one trip ( or 2, or 3 )

you can get appointment tickets to most of the major sites.. in Florence especially.
its the only way to do it really.
makes no sense to stand in line for 2 hrs to see the David when they let the timed arrivals in ahead of you.

Nope. Your first post was correct. All you can see in one trip is the tourist areas. You cannot even begin to take in such a large and diverse city until the 2nd or 3rd trip.

I was there last Oct. I used Wide and Tele. with aN D800. As already stated you can only back up so much in Roma. You can spend hours with your tele just shooting details in the buildings ! BE STREET SMART. Shoulder strap for the 850 I use the peak design sling. Make your camera bag look like and old piece of crap, tape it up a bit put some dirt on it lol ! NEVER NEVER put it down. Enjoy the trip its a beautiful country. photo tip : when your by the Colosseum on the side of the train station go up those stairs. Best if you ca do the blue hour, rest your camera on the stone wall and shoot 20 or so at different exp. you will get a wall hanger for sure. OH YEA #1 tip always, have a euro coin in your pocket. bathrooms are not free !

The real charm of Italy is in the countryside and coastline. Our last couple of trips, we just toured around the hilltowns of Umbria, Tuscany, Cinque Terra and Lake Como. Never went into any of the 'grand tour' cities . During the shoulder season the little towns are heavenly quiet and peaceful and the streets are nearly deserted in the afternoon from 12:30 to 3:30.

We have traveled many times in many parts of Italy.

You are only in each location for a short time. You need the lightest kit for that kind of traveling.
Please be careful their are very clever thieves in Rome and especially Florence. The people are
great buy the thieves are very difficult. Like most we always take to much gear. Have a good time.

I was there and had absolutely no problem. I assume you did.

Rome has been bad news for many, many folks. You really have to watch your stuff and hold it tight ALL the time. Not tourist friendly at all.
