I use LR and PS whether Im home or on the road I download my photos daily . While on the road you can see what you want to keep and get rid of the rest and if you have the time you can do some editing.

If you are going to be doing photo editing on an iPad, you owe it to yourself to try Adobe Lightroom Mobile.

Which morphed into the NEW Lightroom CC 2018... Lr Mobile is no more, but Lr CC runs on most everything.

Lightroom CLASSIC CC 2018 is the new desktop version.

Hi All,
I have recently purchased an a6000 and would appreciate the groups help and opinions on what route I should take for my processing. I have a MacBook Pro (please don’t tell me to go the windows route) but it doesn’t have enough memory left on the hard drive so I could buy and install a larger ssd drive which would run ~ $500-$700 depending on what size I went with. Or I could buy an iPad Pro with enough memory and use that. I can download the raw files via wifi with the included Sony app ( does this cause any loss of data) or use an adapter that would load the files either directly from the camera or from the card. The new IPad would run $1000-$1200 again depending on memory size.
I haven’t decided yet on what software I would use but at this point I’m leaning towards either Lightroom or Photoshop. I have been reading a lot of the discussions on UHH about the various programs out there and their pros and cons and I’m welcome to further input on this but it is not really the original question.

Obviously it’s more expensive to buy the new IPad but I’m used to using one and with the new pencil it can do some pretty good detailed work. I have never used any post processing software that was more complicated than a few free apps I have tried that gives you a few basic overall adjustments like hue, saturation etc. For some reason I think with the IPad ‘s ability to easily zoom into a specific area and do touch ups or other things I think it would be easier to use. I might be entirely wrong about this so that’s why I’m asking. The money is not as important as getting the picture right. It’s like the question I read today asking about lens filters. You spent a lot of money on your lenses and your willing to sacrifice quality on filters by buying the cheap ones on eBay from China 😳. I just want to have the best and easiest to use setup for doing my post processing while I’m away from home. They both are equally portable and I can use a small 1 or 2 tb drive for storage of the images but which of the two options would give me the greater ease of work and outcome of results. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Instead of spending a lot of money for a new computer, iPad or SSD, buy a Western Digital WD Elements SE portable USB 2/3 hard drive. They are very compact (4.33" x 3.21") and weigh under 6 ounces. They come formatted for Windows, but all you have to do is go into Disk Utility on your Macbook and repartition it. They are cheep, $63.98 for 1 TB, $88.52 for 2 TB and $132.48 (manufacturer's list price) and can be bought for less from several vendors.

I use a MacBook Pro for processing while traveling. I keep it configured the same as my desktop Mac Pro. Sounds like you just need to upgrade the disk drive, or add an external disk drive and offload files.

I do processing while traveling because I travel a lot, and need to get files processed and delivered under deadline whether they are from shoots at home or on the road.

Hi All
Many very good suggestions which is why I keep coming here everyday. Just to update everyone here’s what I ended up doing. I went to a few retailers and found a Western Digital external hard drive 2TB for Mac that ran $79. It’s raining here so today I’m going to download all the music and photos from the MacBook Pro to free up some room. Then I think I’ll try the Sony software just because it’s native to my camera and free to try. I plan on downloading all my pictures to the new external drive and then pull them into the laptop to work on them and put the finished product back onto the external thus not clogging up my laptop again. I plan on keeping the original raw file back onto the external too for saving purposes and just in case I want to reprocess at a later date.

Thanks again for all your feedback and I’ll update everyone in a few months and let you know how it works and what if any issues I run into. I may eventually ask Santa for the iPad Pro 12 “ as they really have a great looking screen and the apps are getting better all the time but for now I spent a total of $82 and have plenty of room to work with. Thanks again everyone.

Nelson, you really need a backup strategy beyond what you described here. Standard procedure is one on-site drive, one offline drive, also on site, and a cloud storage account OR off-site drive.

You can use Time Machine (part of MacOS) to automate the main backup.

In November of 2015 I had posted a similar question.
Since then I have purchased an IPad Pro 12.9” 512GB to replace my MacBook Pro, to lighten the “load” when I travel.
I have also sold my Canon equipment and moved to the mirrorless Panasonic GH5.
Getting back to your question, I have used the IPad with very good results. I download the RAW photos using the sd card adapter into photo and place them in a album and then use the Lightroom mobile to work on the photographs. Once the photos are moved into Lightroom I place them in a folder. In addition I also backup the photos from the SD card to a 2 TB portable drive and also have 1TB portable hard drive that has a SD card slot & also works with WiFi. Although I can download jpeg photos by WiFi from the camera I am not able to do the same with RAW.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions you may contact directly.

I know I didn’t mention it and that was an oversight but I do backup everything ( photos, music, mail etc on iCloud. I have my phone and my laptop set to backup every night while I’m sleeping. Do you think it’s worth the cost and trouble to buy a second e external drive to double my external saves both photos and music ? I know everyone’s worst nightmare is losing their files. As is I have my existing photos on the external drive and the iCloud. Thanks for the advice.

I back up to 2 drives. Have not yet decided about backing up to the cloud.
Regards the iPad Pro I forgot to mention another advantage, is, the use of the pencil. It gives precise control with adjustments. In my recent visit to Merritt Island NWR I used only the iPad and the pencil to work on the photos.
Having send that, I do have a 27” iMac also to work with.
