For many years I used a Bogen 3021 tripod with a 3025 head and loved it. It met my needs very well and was also sturdy enough to hold my view camera when I wanted swings and tilts. Unfortunately, it was lost in one of California's wild fires although I still have an extra center post with no head to which I can mount the view camera directly. With the current price of 4 x 5 film, I want to be sure I don't waste a sheet, so I am in the market for a similar tripod. Having had my share of experiences with tripods that seemed fine until after you used them some, I am tending away from the used market to avoid inheriting someone else's headache but, having had the Bogen for many years, it has been many years since I have been in the market. In spite of weight capacity ratings, I am tending away from ball heads because of unhappy past experiences and the need to occasionally mount a view camera. Is there any sort of cross reference available between old Bogen model numbers/styles and current Manfrotto offerings? Living in the middle of nowhere, I will be pretty much limited to ordering on line from one of the stores members here keep recommending (B&H, Adorama, etc.). Any input before I give one of the stores a call to discuss my needs would be more than welcome. Thanks.
This Manfrotto is considered the replacement for what you have, $229 without the head.

I have the exact one that you lost. In fact it is set up right now with a Nikkor 200-400 and D300 sitting on it.
There aren't too many things to go wrong with these. Even if you had to buy 2 used ones to make a perfect one you would be ahead of the game.

You want stability and reasonable weight?

The 3021 is an OK tripod but if I were shooting 4X5 I would be using a 475b ........

or something just like it ...

I have a Bogan 3050 and a Bogan 3068 that I bought from a local college. Ineed to keep one and the head, but can sell either tripod. PM me if interested. Very solid units.
I generally prefer my Ries J600 with the J250 head, but the 3021 and Bogen 3047 pan head supports a Crown Graphic with a 12" f/9.0 Goerz Red Dot APO-Artar just fine. Not much vibration from that Compur leaf shutter.

KEH has an 'excellent' grade Bogen 3021 legs on sale for $79. KEH has a great reputation here.

Yes. I only use the head with DSLR, 35mm, and medium format. With the 4 x 5, I would mount it directly on the center post and level with the legs. The camera also has its own level. That gives greater stability with less weight than adding a head that could also handle the 4 x 5. It's a single rail Graphic with its own vertical tilt in its base. It's not a field camera, but it's not particularly heavy and relatively easy to balance over the tripod. The majority of my film work is in medium format. A tripod that will handle that would have no problem with the Nikon 35mm or DSLR gear.

How do you get a 12 inch lens to focus on a Crown Graphic ??

With a long barrel on a custom lensboard.

I would say you need something quite stable with that rig and magnification .......
Stay away from Manfrotto with its proprietary clamps. My choices are Gitzo or Really Right Stuff with universal ARCA Clamps. All types of L brackets and hardware are available using the ARCA Swiss system.
People PEOPLE stay focus he does not want to here about your other tripods he talking about manfrotto
Thanks for the input. Bill_de, thank you for the direct cross reference. I'll call some of the stores and see what they are able to add to the mix. Where I like to use the 4 x 5, the ground is rarely level, sometimes in the middle of a stream, and almost always a fair walk from the nearest transportation. The tripod I lost made a great compromise (sans head) between weight and stability for the large format. When I am actually backpacking, I don't go larger than my Mamiya 645 or Hasselblad. Weight is definitely a concern.
