French Photo Magazines.

I stopped into the airport book store on the way home from the French island of Martinique and was amazed to find a whole rack of photography and video magazines - all in French unfortunately. I don't know much French. but I could tell the magazines were full of well written, lengthy articles with a minimum of ads or equipment puff pieces and the pictures were phenominal. I have seen a couple of reasonably decent UK photo magazines in my travels, but nothing like this. I have subscriptions to Outdoor Photographer and Shutterbug which are pathetic in comparison. Are there any good in-depth US photo magazines I don't know about?

I think there are many more camera magazines and very few
magazines devoted to serious photography.

Agreed.

Here, in our Acquisitive Society Syndrome (ASS) bubble that is the US of A, we seem to get the best magazines we can buy... stuffed with promises of instant photographic excellence gratification, only a credit card away. S/he who pays the most money, gets to show off the most ASS, and once you have more ASS than you can handle, you must be a good photographer, right?

Which is why UHH is so important. Here, we can choose to encourage the Long Search for Truth in Light.

When I was a kid there were several in the US. The most popular were Popular Photography, which I subscribed to and preferred, and Modern Photography, which had more ads and I would buy on the street if I was thinking of buying.

Back in the 70's, in addition to Popular Photography and Modern Photography, there were a few other magazines that were more instructional than just ad showcases. I fondly miss Camera 35, the original Petersen's Photographic (resurrected in the early 2000's but a shadow of its former self), and the original Shutterbug, which was printed on newsprint and the size of a tabloid newspaper. These magazines were filled with how-to articles, technique, and notable photographer bios, and much fewer camera reviews. Rangefinder Magazine is still around, I think, and it was always good if you were into commercial or studio photography.

Back then I subscribed to all of them, as well as Outdoor Photography, and three others from other countries (written in English). For the last few years, I have had none coming in the mail.

I remember seeing PHOTO (the French version) quite often in the States.
A lot of interesting photographs, but written in French.
The American version of PHOTO, as I recall, was a lot of celebrity pictures
and a healthy amount of camera ads. Quite banal.

Many on the newsstands in the US are now from the UK (N Photo for Nikon users, Digital Photography, Camera Shopper, Digital Camera, and a few others) - mostly expensive but with DVDs with trial software, tutorials, etc. I pick these up occasionally for $13-15.

If you have a branch of Barnes and Noble near you they stock a whole bunch of English language photo magazines. Most are from the UK, well written, with old and new tips on photography, as well as long articles. Some of the magazines are aimed at one make of camera, others wider ranging on digital photography in general. I enjoy reading two in particular and have a regular order: Digital Photographer, and Photo Professional. My grand-daughter devours them after me. LOL! I have been told you can get many photo magazines shipped direct to you from the UK and it is less costly. I guess you can Google 'photo magazines UK' for details.

I go to Barnes and Noble every month and buy PhotoPlus The Canon Magazine ($14.99), Practical Photography ($11.99) and Digital Camera World ($14.99); all UK Publications and, to me, well worth the price. I currently subscribe to Shutterbug and Outdoor Photographer but probably won't renew. Going to Google 'photo magazines UK' and see what I come up with.

Still seems to me that these magazines are more about the camera
and not about the photography.

You say you don't speak much French, so how do you know the articles were well written?

Perhaps he reads French just well enough to make that assessment. Since he
was not offering a critical review of the articles I really don't think his statement
is all that important to his overall message.

Many of the remaining (living) authors and Contributors now have their You Tube Channels. And in an earlier day, the You Tube folks of today would have had their columns, articles and reviews published in these magazines of yesteryear.

They are, weekly, FREE and you can subscribe! And some also have Podcasts.
