Reno Air Races 2012

I heard on the local news this morning, the air races may be cancelled. The new insurance premiums they need to come up with for this years races, haven't been met. They need $2 million dollars, and have only raised $1 million so far. If the money isn't raised soon, I guess the races are off. I'll post more as I find out about it. I'm sure there will be a lot of disappointed people if they are cancelled.

I don't know if their premium got raised because of the recent tragedy, but the percentage of a possible accident should not really be any higher than it was before...maybe less.
I hope they're able to hold the event.

Yes that's the reason.... I agree the chances of something happening like that again, shouldn't actually be higher, but everyone involved doesn't see it that way. There were several lawsuits filed against the air races after the accident. I never did hear how any have turned out, if they have even gone to court as yet.

My husband was there last year sitting 50 feet from the box seats involved in the accident. And there a couple years ago helping a crew when there was a midair collision.

He doesn't feel it should be cancelled but thought they may take the course farther from the stands.

Hey Tim, we hope to. It depends on Darcie's schedule and finances. September has something going on every weekend. We are going to Reno in August to a wedding as well. I have several friends who will be there so it's kinda like a reunion.
Last weekend we were at Auburn and spent part of the day with Tim O'Brien and his brother Brian who were coordinating the Thunder in the Sky Air Fair. Tim is the one who took the photos of Jimmy Leewards P-51 as is went off course and lost the rear elevator trim tab. His photos were seen world wide.
I'll let you know when I do.
Later...

As of yesterday morning it wasn't, they were still a $1 million dollars short for the insurance.

It's hard to believe they may not have them. That's a big revenue generator. Lawsuits will put a cramp in it though. OH well, if they do, there will always be the balloon races or Hot August Nights or Street Vibrations. That place rocks this time of year.

That's what the news said, but they are still $400,000 short, and that's not chump change in this tight economy.
