Lol... Totally misunderstood the topic... Sounded like a burlesque club.

If it's a bright sunny day, you will want a polarizing filter when in the pits if the cars are not under a canopy. Being near the starting line might mean rubber bits and small oil drops flying around. The shutdown area is very interesting, it's fun to watch the cars go by at 320 mph (assuming there are pro fuel cars there) but you miss the smoky burnouts.

I have never used a polarizing filter but your mileage may vary. Don't stand behind the cars when they are doing their burnouts as any small rocks, sand, dirt they picked up along with rubber and water will be thrown at you and your camera at high speeds. You usually only experience this once before you learn to stay at an angle when behind the cars. If you are shooting trackside a couple step stool or platform can be useful to stand on too... You can see some of my photos on my Facebook page but I have not posted much racing over the winter...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I think it would depend on whether or not the OP has a pit pass or is just going to view from the normal spectator sidelines.

I'm going to the local drag strip on Sunday.I have a d5100 and several lenses. I have a Sigma 150-500, a Tokina 11-16, Nikon 70-300, 55-300, 18-70. which lens would do the best?
I just went into my files and found that when I went and shot with my Nikon D800E, I did all of my shooting--lots of pits shots, race photos, and portrait-type shots--with my 28-300mm lens. As a matter of fact, it was the only lens I used that day. You have plenty of megapixels, so shoot wide, crop tight. Enjoy.

The last time I was at a drag strip was in 1968.

I am sure you have been to the drag strip before so you can imagine what kind of shots you want and how far you will be to take it. With that information you can decide which lens you need.

At drag races every one is allowed in the pits and usually in the staging lanes...

What I would do is put all of them in a big fancy case, and every ten minutes open the case in front of everyone and change lenses.

For the track at Sebring (a road course) I've had the best results with a 70-200mm. Longer lenses for greater distance are subject to the distortion of heat coming off the track (on a sunny day).

I always use my 70-200 2.8 lens at the track. I frequent Norwalk here in Ohio and shoot NHRA event there and also Night Under Fire and his lens works great.
