Object in viewfinder

When I look through the viewfinder with or without a lens on, I see a raggedly rectangle shaped piece of debris in the lower left quadrant. I never see it it my photos, just when using the viewfinder and not in live view either so for the most part it is harmless. But it still bugs me! I cleaned the sensor, the mirror and this speck isn't on or behind the mirror. It is a Canon Rebel T5i (700D). I called my local computer store and he said it is stuck in my prism somewhere and that it is there to stay. No way it's coming out. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks!

Yup, that's possible. It's also possible that it's on the ground glass on the mirror box side too - take the lens off and use a rocket blower above the mirror and see if it helps. You're probably stuck, but worth a try.

but it could simply be on the focusing screen.

Yup, been there too. Don't ask me how, but there was a small piece of lint in the top view finder. I had to live with it until I retired the camera. It bugged me but I did get used to it.

I've had dust on the focusing screen of my DSLR cameras. It's the rectangular plate at the top of the mirror box. Get a filtered blower to blow off dust and debris. I have the Koh Global Hepa Jet Air II blower, It has a large hepa filter, an anti-static filter, a one-way check valve, and a medical grade PVC bulb. Most blowers have a rubber bulb that can shed fine particles. The PVC bulb won't do that. Adorama Camera carries it and you can order it directly from Koh Global.

I had a similar with my D750. Bugged me so much I poked around on internet and learned how to remove the focus prism. Blew it out and problem solved.
