Concerning 42nd St. Photo
A couple of days ago I came upon a You Tube video by The Angry Photographer A.K.A. Theoria Apophasis or simply Ken Wheeler.
The title of it is " Epic OMG Unbelievable Photography Hoax." It is 5 minutes and 12 seconds in duration. It concerns a conversation he had with a long time friend of his concerning an elderly lady who purchased a Nikon D750 from 42nd St. Photo. She paid about $ 2400.00 for the lens and camera which is about right, However they socked her about $2300.00 extra for such things as warranties for the lens and body, 500.00 for a card worth about $60.00, $500.00 for filters worth about $20.00 apiece etc. There is a link posted by Wheeler's friend on his video showing the itemized bill of sale. It is
https://www.flickr.com/photos/1347461He said he believes that it is authentic. I know some members occasionally inquire about this company. I have no personal vendetta against this outfit. I'm just passing this along. It may be or not useful information for some people.
Unfortunately, the link did not work for me, but this is a shocking story.
I have not heard any good about this company.
42nd St Photography is a major scam center. The louder that is shouted the better it will be heard by the unsuspecting.

We owe it to ourselves to be or become wise consumers in a world filled with shysters. Otherwise we become victims.
Some older generation photographers confuse 42nd Street Photo with the original 47th Street Photo in NYC, which closed down in the late 1990's and had an excellent reputation for many years. I suspect the founder(s) of 42nd St. Photo purposefully took advantage of this reputation by selecting a deceptively similar name. A wolf in sheep's clothing!

Your revelations about 42nd street surprise no regulars here. They do not get good marks here and never have.
rookc24:
I think you're right about "42nd Street's" name grab. "47th St" was a good store with a good rep. I bought my first SLR there back in the early 80s and the salesman actually "downsold" me to make sure I didn't get in over my head.
It always pays to do a google search on any new potential vendor, simply put in the name along with "reviews" and one should be able to make their own determination as to whether they do business with them or not. Horror stories abound with places like 42nd st., Abe's of Maine and the like. P. T. Barnum, "there's one born every minute". That's what vendors like these count on to stay in business. Another famous saying attributed to Thomas Tusser, "a fool and his money are soon parted".
I know something about 42nd Street Camera and it is keep at least one mile away from them. I assume the poor lady knows very little about photography because unless she bought a gray market she needs no extra warranty for her camera or lens.
We all know that a polarizer and a ND filter are useful for digital photography but that is about it. Memory today is so cheap that unless someone needs 300 Mb. many of the good SD media sells under $30.
If you ask me they work one scam after another.

I also think you may be right about the 42nd St scam and the now defunct 47th St. I believe I bought my Asahi Pentax K2 DMD camera from 47th Street Photo back sometime around 1980-82. I know I bought it mail order COD back when. I'm thinking because it was significantly cheaper than Frank's Highland Park Camera in the L.A. area where I shopped regularly in the day. A somewhat funky neighborhood back then.

Link is bad. So is 42nd St. Photo’s reputation. Just say no. Try Adorama, B&H, Cameta Camera, KEH (used), or Roberts... They’re all favorites of UHH users.
