I think they're very good compositions. The use of the rule of thirds is great. In photo #1 you have the gentleman on the right one-third and there's more space on the side that he's facing. Photo #2 is very good because the rule of thirds is working and it's more dynamic. I just wish the shadow around his right eye could have been brightened. In photo #3, I would maybe use the leveling tool in your editing software to level the photo or give it more slant for the effect.

“Portraits” Within a Picture”.

As the images stand in their original composition and “print” quality, the are OK people pictures- they tell a story and the subjects are interesting. They do, however, lack the ingredients to qualify as “advanced or professional” quality portraits. But WAIT!- all the ingredients are there they just have not been mixed and baked properly- YET!

Portraits of people should have the subject become the motif- the major focal point of the image. The lighting and detail should show the subject's character. The composition should lead the viewer's eye to the subject's likeness and expression and dynamic lines make for a more animated and interesting image.

In my experience as a print judge in professional competitions, I found that many of the images that scored poorly "lost it" in the finishing/post processing/custom printing stage. So many images were under-printed or lacked highlight detail- they were simply printed (edited) too light leaving the highlights void of texture and detail and the shadows lacking in richness. Oftentimes, the composition was just too loose, not with the savvy use of negative space- simply too much unneeded environment and distractions.

So...In theses images, the OP has provided great off-camera lighting, caught phenomenal expressions on very interesting characters so all that remains to do to bring theses into the realm of advanced portraits is some interesting cropping a bit of dodging and burning.

In the next reply box, I have some quick edits... theses look like the promo shots for the 1960s classic film “The Hustler” with Paul Newman playing Fast Eddie Falsen and Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats.

Not every portrait needs to be formal, however, even in casual, candid and documentary portraiture, the aesthetics and finer points can be applied.
