I have Canon 6d mk2 camera with the above lens but haven't been happy with results regarding focus sharpness. I upgraded from a 550d apsc body. Tried the L lens on old body and still not good. Put on my old Efs 55-250is lens on 550d and results so much sharper. I know I can micro adjust this L lens on the 6d mk2 body but stuck with results on the 550d body. Very disappointed with the results of what is supposed to be a quality lens. What else can I do? If I had just invested in so called superior glass for my old body as so many people suggest, then I would be one very unhappy camper!!!

You might try letting another set of eyes see examples of your issues. To do so, create a reply with one or a few original images straight from the camera and be sure to store the original so the files can be downloaded and reviewed in detail on our end. Best would be to post at least one example from each body with the same lens.

I get very good results with my first model 24-105L f/4 on every body I have used it on (6D, 7DII, 5DIV and 80D).

Take it to the camera store and ask them to check it out. You also might check out the latest firmware for each body. I had one lens that did not play well with my 7DII and a firmware update fixed it.

I have the same 24-105L lens and couldn't be happier. I've used it with a Canon 60D and 7D II, and now use it adapted with two Sony A7+ (A7S and A7R II) cameras. One of the sharpest lenses I own.

This is my walk around lens for 85% of situations, first with used with a 5D III and now with 5D SR. I bought the 5D SR before visiting Peru last year and made nice enlargements of Machu Picchu using this lens. The individual stones are tac sharp and I see no reason to upgrade to the newer version lens.

You might also try a couple of exposures using manual focus to see if it’s a lens issue or an AF issue. I find it helps to use a standard focusing chart like the ISO 12233 that you can download here: https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2014/02/setting-up-an-optical-testing-station/
and print on glossy paper on a decent printer - removes one more variable from the test vs shooting a scene. Post some results here after you’ve run the tests. I have the 24-105L (MKI), and it is plenty sharp on a FF.

Is this on AUTOFOCUS? Try a few manually focussed via the rear screen on maximum magnification. If necessary use a magnifying glass to aid pinpoint sharpness on close up shots.

I have the same issues, I had sold a 24-105 when I purchased a Tamron 24-70 but missed the extra reach of the 24-105 so I replaced it only to find that it does not seem as sharp as the Tamron on my camera. Neither of Canon's 24-105 L lenses perform very well in resolution tests when compared to their competitors.

Some very useful suggestions, thank you. Will definitely try to resolve this set back to find a solution to my problem. Manual focus to check against auto focus sounds a way to go. Was so disappointed after paying out for what is supposed to be a far superior system and currently appears to be giving an inferior result.

Agree. I use the 24-105 L for about 85% of my photos and it is very good. Even sell a few. Not only post a picture or two but include the settings. We may be able to help having both, i.e input and output. :)

Take off any "protective" filters and do a focus test ......with BOTH bodies.

The FIRST you should do with any new lens.

I had the older 24-105. So did a friend. He nor I were ever satisfied with sharpness. Both of us have moved to a 24-70. Him Canon, and I Tamron.
I went Tamron because of the IS. He does only landscapes so did not need the IS. Now we are both happy. Before purchasing, we both considered the series ll 24-105 the many reviews we read suggested its sharpness had not improved enough.
So what can you do? Well no one is making a good 24-105 (too bad) so you have to sacrifice the extra telephoto and, in my opinion and after seeing results with both of the choices above, make you choice based on your need as described by the choices I and my friend made.

I have had 3 or 4 of these lenses over time and they have all been great and very sharp. You might have something else going on but it should be the lens, unless you have a defective copy.

If you believe DXOMark’s lens testing, the 24-105L is no slouch in terms of sharpness. It’s marginally better in terms of sharpness than the 24-70 f2.8L or 4.0L and worse than the latest 24-70 f2.8L MkII. It’s not to be confused with the 24-105 non-L USM or STM lenses, which test substantially worse: https://www.dxomark.com/best-canon-lenses-under-13000-dollars

Note: these figures are using a 5D3 body (closest thing available in terms of sensor to a 6D2). The numbers will be different on different bodies

So, if you’re having sharpness issues, you may be having AF issues or a faulty lens (and make sure there is no filter on the lens when testing as has been suggested), but the 24-105L is not a bad lens in terms of sharpness. Not among the sharpest Canon makes, but not bad either.

Edit: for a pretty balanced and comprehensive test and comparison to both the MKI and some other 3rd party lenses: https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-4L-IS-II-USM-Lens.aspx
