Great, fun video. Kai is a crackup.
Kai makes you laugh, but teaches at the same time. Thank you!
Thanks for the link...I enjoyed watching it. That's my next investment!
It's funny...I was in the airport with my hands full, but after watching the video I started looking for 50mm shots and was surprised at how many I wished I had taken like the one of the Buddhist Monk with the DSLR or the mom with her left arm fully tattooed holding her newborn. Inspiration may be key, but changing your focuse every now and then can really open your eyes!
I started shooting in the 1950s and remember having only a 50mm for the leica. I never moved up to more of a lens until the mid 60s when I got a 135. But, I still tend to see things through a 50mm and it is my walk around lens. It sits on my T1i and goes everywhere. I really like to shoot kids. It does not up set parents and the kids ignore it. In fact, almost everyone ignores my 50mm but put on a 17-35 and everyone takes notice and a 70-300 and people think you have a cannon!
I've wanted to take pictures of people at different events...but I'm always a little hesitant...I guess once I do it the "first time" every time after will be a piece of cake!

A book of a thousand photos starts with one
One can do street photography by just shooting folks. You can do it be not being obvious by being obvious. Just point the camera at the person and shot. You would be surprised how many people never notice you. Or you can do photography of street people. For instance, I went to a play ground with a basketball hoop. These guys were playing and I said mind if I shoot the game. They said no. After the game I said Hey how about posing for me. They set up their own shot or should I say shots. We all had fun. I asked if they had a computer and sent them the photos.
the trick is not being afraid. If someone complains about your taking their pic just say OK I will erase it or if you want I will send it to you. Most say Oh, send it here's my e mail address....
Perhaps you need another point of view. I have gotten some of my best travel shots with an 18-105 while sitting outside in a restaurant or on a church steps or in a car with the window rolled down. Last year I sold all my big, heavy dSLR stuff and went for a Sony NEX 5N and again, I was able to capture great images with their kit 18-55 lens. As I tell my students, the most important thing you need to capture great images is the thing that is 6 inches behind the camera, YOU.
To me its the best lenses you can have on camera weather 35mm, or cropped! Back in the film era I shot most of all pictures with a 50mm f1.4 Lens. On a few times I need a longer or Zoom type Lens would I use one. The 50mm is a great on for any person to have.
There is no question that a 50mm or equivalent lens will meet the needs of most photogs but if you are traveling with one lens then how could you not want to have a 28-85 lens to cover your bases. I traveled India with just that lens on my Sony 5N and shot pictures on foot, and from a moving car with fantastic results. Yes, I could have done just fine 75% of the time with just a 50mm lens, but I would have missed some fantastic shots that my kit lens allowed me to get. I would not have been happy missing those shots if I only had a 50mm lens.
