Nikon D300 ... memory card questions

The d300 users manual specifies sandisk Ultra sdcfh cards 1,2,4,or 8GB -- or equivalents by other makers. I like sandisk so I will stay with that brand UNLESS someone gives me a reason to switch.
When I shopped for the specified sandisk card, I was offered the 1-2-4-8 GB sizes specified by the users manual, but I was also offered a 16gb size which is still within the manual's specified sdcfh ultra...
Q1- will the 16gb size be okay for the d300 even though not on the specified list?
Q2- since I am not a heavy shooter, photo-wise, which size memory card is probably okay for me?
I expected card prices to escalate in correlation with GB size. This proved true except in a few cases where a smaller size cost more than a larger size, apparently because of a high MB/s...
Q3- I observed 2 speeds: 15MB/s & 30 MB/s. Since I am not a heavy shooter (far from it, in fact), which speed makes better sense for me?

If you're not pushing limits on the amount of photos, I'd get an 8GB, but get one with the fastest write time available for that size card.

The reason the manual shows the smaller sizes is because that was all that was readily available at the time. I have a SanDisk 32GB 120 mb/s card in my D300. Set to record RAW and Jpg fine will take over 800 images.
If you are not a heavy shooter I have 2 Lexar cards, 8 and 2 GB, that you are welcome to. They are 40 and 80 speed which is fast enough for the D300.

All newer cards are backwards compatible. Any name brand Class 6 or faster will work well. That includes high capacity UHS cards as well. Just be sure to format the card in the camera.
HOWEVER, something to watch for is counterfeit cards. Buy your cards from any well known / reputable outlet. That could be B&H, Samy's, Robert's, or Walmart, Best Buy, or other large brick and mortar with or without a large on-line presence. You never know where Pete's Close Out got their cards.
These cards may be mislabeled or poorly manufactured. Stay with name brands from name brands.

I used San Disk Extreme 16gb cards in my D300 and never had an issue, performance was always excellent.

What's not true is the D300 accepting any form of SD card. They use compact flash.
