What does the camera's instructions say?

Additionally, what does the manual say about how to achieve the maximum possible Frames Per Second? How many seconds or frames can that FPS be maintained? Are those frames RAW or JPEG?

10 FPS is theoretically possible with the largest RAW files that can be a captured by a 7D Mk ii, with a fast card:
1. SD cards with UHS-I (SDR104) and;
2. CF cards with UDMA 7, allowing theoretical maximum write speeds of 104MB/s and 167MB/s, respectively.

Using a fast card allows the buffer to empty quickly and shoot at high frame rate longer. I shoot RAW with Sandisk’s 32Gb Pro Series SD cards, and I get around 10 FPS... for the 3.1 seconds before the buffer fills up = 30 or 31 frames. That works fine for me, for the sports and BIF topics I generally shoot.

If you want to shoot longer without buffering out, then take a tip from the Pro Sports Shooters and shoot in as low a quality of JPEG as you find acceptable; that will probably allow you to shoot 10 FPS almost continually, until you fill a fast card... but be aware that those guys are generally only publishing their work on websites and daily newspapers, where low res and SOOC isn’t an issue... and their press passes allow them to stand much closer to the action. 😎

Sorry, I just realized that you didn’t actually specify a 7D Mk ii; you may have the original 7D? In which case, you may, with your existing UDMA-6 CF card, be using the fastest compatible card available?

I’m sure there are others here who have experience with the original 7D (unfortunately not me), who can advise. My suggestions for tuning your frame capture mode and resolution probably still holds good, for getting maximum FPS rates without buffering & with acceptable quality.

This is the card I use in my 7DII. It writes and reads fast, has plenty of room for big photo files, is (according to my research) the best to one to use if you shoot video. I can say that in the year I have used it, it has worked perfectly. Perhaps it will work in your 7D just as well.

The lexar 1066 works the best for me also. Had the 800 before but the 1066 was much better.

pmorin, have you ever received a 'busy' signal???

I have posted on here before about some trouble i have had about the 'busy' signal and most answers were the card - so I thought i had the best card, I do think Lexar might be a better brand (??)

It is a 7D - not MKii .... i do shoot some night sports, it's not in a fast frame but single shot I receive these 'busy' signals .... drives me crazy!!!!

Thank you everyone!!!

I must ask again....have you READ the manual? Ive seen a trend with your posts here asking questions that can be easily answered if you just sit down and actually read the thing.

Well, then read it again before asking here questions you can find for yourself. Thats just laziness from your part....quite inconsiderate, IMO.

i Moved out of state about 15 years ago and yet still, my best friend is a friend I made 30 years ago.
Last night I made a cup of coffee and he and I talked on the phone for over an hour. We are both kind of “geeks” and I had some question concerning MP3 files.
The stuff we talked about and the information we covered could have all been looked up online.
However, it was the “conversation” we had that was enjoyable. Two people with similar interest taking about things we are both interested in
I think of this photography forum as the same thing.
Perhaps the question asker could have looked in his manual?
But they chose to have a conversation with the people here who enjoy chatting about photography equipment
I don’t really think it’s “lazy” as much as just being social. And it looked like a few people enjoyed sharing their experience and wisdom.
Just a thought....

I shoot a 32GB Scandisk Extreme with 120mbps write speed in my 7D. I am shooting RAW + JPEG large at 10 fps for birds in flight and have never had a buffering problem as of yet. I am using the same card in my 7d II along with a Lexar Extreme SD card with the same file size set up again with no problems. A call to Canon support may shed some light on the problem, also go back and check your settings in your menu. Just a thought. Let me know of your progress just in case I encounter the same problem in the future. hope you find the solution soon.
