I think this maybe was done as a practical joke. we spent a good ten minutes (we're a little slow, now that we're old) and couldn't find any way to open this thing up. from appearances, it should open in the middle, or fold where the hinges are mounted, but Nooooooo.

Did you push in at the hinge, or pull out? It might fold the other way.
