It would be interesting to see similar results from other manufacturers.

For example. If I'm reading the relevant chart correctly, sakes of ILCs are down compared to last year despite introduction of the D850 this year

One key take away from the Imaging Products (ie Photography) Restructuring Plan: "Strengthen Profit model to improve profitability under market shrinkage" Methinks that translates to 'squeeze more profit out of less camera sales'. That sounds a lot like my toilet being flushed.

What is unsettling to note is that on a year to year basis revenue has declined due to the interchangeable lens camera sales being down 110,000 units, lens sales being down 30,000 units and point and shoot units being
down 40,000 units. Then they brag how the net profit is better than the prior year due to their ability to focus on "high value add products". This is forked tongue speak for "we found a way to sell things for much much more than they cost us to make". Since that changed markedly from the Aug 3 projection of net income it can likely be solely attributed to the strong D850 sales. Though I am buying one because it is a remarkable camera - it does not sit well that they are likely making them for slightly more than the D810 per their own figures. I love Nikon but come on. If all the manufacturers get in a race to see who can charge the most for their cameras and have the largest markup it will not end well.

I have an Epipen prescription - costs me $25/yr, but at some point the insurance company is going to put their foot down.

As far as the D850 is concerned, if you have more demand than supply, economic theory says the price should go up; but, of course, Nikon would create an artificial shortage at their peril, because it might drive some users to other brands.

Nobody has their life at risk over a new camera price.

In my humble opinion one of the biggest mistakes concerning marketing took place when they did not pay attention to the introduction of mirrorless cameras. While ALL mirrorless manufacturers are doing very well other companies that have not begun to manufacture and sell those cameras have had financial problems.
Today technology is pretty advanced and smaller cameras with smaller lenses have a great market waiting for them. Many professionals have embraced mirrorless technology and I do not believe anybody is going to deny that those cameras are technologically more advanced than dSLR bodies. AF for action and wildlife has been an issue but they have steadily improved in that respect.
For the past 6 months we have been waiting for a good mirrorless camera from Nikon and we have high expectations the value is not going to be as high as that of their flagship dSLR bodies. Same thing for their lenses.
Nikon seems it has improved a little over their financial problems. You all remember rumors in the past that the company was going to be sold but fortunately that did not happen.
If you ask me, this is not the same Nikon of the 60's and 70's.

When Nikon talks about a shrinking market, they are talking about the total market for interchangeable lens cameras and lenses. They are saying that they (Nikon) is trying to get a bigger share of a smaller market. Today, I went to LEGOLAND with my grandchildren. The place was packed with little kids, parents and grandparents. I was the only one there taking photos with a real interchangeable lens camera. Everyone else was using their smart phones to take their photos. This is the problem that all camera manufacturers face. Every year smart phone cameras get better while improvements in DSLRs are incremental. This is why the market is shrinking. Only a small number of dedicated photographers will buy these dedicated cameras in the future.
