My wife has a Canon PowerShot SD700 IS Digital Elph. She has insisted on continually embarrassing me by taking some of the GREATEST snapshots including pictures on international travel. And all this while I was schlepping either my Nikon N80 (film) or D50 (DSLR). We are about to take a trip to Italy. I purchased a 4,8 and 16 gig card for her only to discover that her little P&S will not accommodate anything larger than a 2 gig card. Am I doing something wrong or is it really true that her little Elph will only handle the 2 gig cards. Gads, do they even make cards that small any more?

I've used an 8GB card in my SD800, so I think your 700 should be able to take more than 2GB. Do you have the owner's manual? That should tell you what cards it can take.
I found the manual online, but I didn't see anything about SD card limitations.

Cards are based on class, your older Canon likely takes only standard SD cards which limit you to 2GB max. Newer cameras will also accept SD HC cards which are always 4GB or larger. These 2 cards are physically the same but quite different internally. SD cameras typically will NOT recognize SD HC cards when they are inserted. The manual will not address this issue if it was printed and issued before SD HC cards were released as it has no idea they exist.
Page 3 of the PDF Manual that Jerry provided a link for clearly says that you can use "SD" cards, nothing about SD HC so you are definitely limited to 2GB cards.
THANKS, JERRY AND SHOOTER. Pulled out the manual and there it was, on page 113 ... SD cards only.

I guess I was lucky to get the SD800 because that doesn't have that 2GB limit.
Look on page 126, it shows 16mb for pictures and movies. It looks like 128mb came with the camera.
Larry - might be difficult to find a 2 GB SD card unless you know the "trick". You can get one at Walgreens or CVS or some other similar pharmacy. I'm not sure why they are still being sold there, but they are.
