Just a couple samples from Orchid show. Light was not real good and I don't have a flash suitable for macro photography.
This resulted in a very shallow DOF.

Yes. Orchids are a challenge without adequate lighting. No pop-up? When using flash, one of challenges is adequate diffusion. Otherwise you’ll can get a glittery look which is not attractive.

I like to use natural / available light by putting the camera on a tripod. Actually I think this was actually shot handheld. I'd have to look on a different HDD for my L.A. Co. (Arcadia) Arboretum Orchid House images. I like the back-lighting on this.

They can be a challenge anytime.

I think you did quite well under the circumstances. I assume you couldn't use a tripod at an orchid show. In that case, your only real alternatives would be to increase the ISO so you could stop the lens down for more depth or use flash which would have a questionable outcome.

I think #1 is excellent just as it is. The center is quite sharp and the lighting is good. The softer focus of the outer parts of the flower really doesn't detract from the photo at all. All of #2 seems soft to me. #3 seems sharp in the very center. It looks good but could have benefited from at least a little more depth. Orchids are very dimensional flowers so they are definitely a challenge and the show setting makes it even more difficult. Bravo to you for accepting the challenge of photographing these beauties in a trying situation!
