I just got my new D850 yesterday and took some test shots to compare it to my D750. To my surprise neither Adobe Bridge or Photoshop CC will open the raw files. In addition, if I just open the picture folder on my PC (Win 8.1), the photo viewer also can't open the raw images. Both work fine with the D750 raw files. I just renewed my Photoshop CC membership in January, but perhaps Adobe has only recently updated their software to work with D850 raw files. Of course this happened on a Sunday and for some reason I can't get the updater on creative cloud to work, so I will be calling Adobe tomorrow. In the interim, I thought I would check with those of you who have the 850 to see if you have had similar issues. I am particularly surprised that the Windows photo viewer won't open the pictures either.
I did search for this issue but didn't see any earlier threads, so my apologies if it has been discussed and I just missed it. Thanks.
Phil
Update Adobe, then it will open the NEF files
Update PS CC and ACR. (Noted your issue, no solution for that - as you said, deal with Adobe)
Windows viewer... Update the CODECs using Nikon or Microsoft WEB sites.
Thanks for the quick responses. For some reason my login is not working on Creative Cloud today, so I will call tomorrow to get that fixed and update the program. I thought that might all there was to it and am glad to know that is indeed the case. By the way, I am very pleased already with the sharpness of the 850. Looking forward to getting it out in the field.

The phone in often is overloaded. Try the user-to-user Lightroom forum. You will probably get faster results.
https://forums.adobe.com/community/lightroom/lightroom-classic-ccThe first things they will tell you to do is find and launch the Adobe Creative Cloud app. It is the subscription manager.
Then log in to your account from that app. It should show the updates that are available.
If not, reset the app with a logout and login.
An alternate way of launching the Creative Cloud management app is to click Updates on the Lightroom Help menu.

Unfortunately, I have tried both of those and I keep getting a message saying that they cannot authenticate my Adobe ID. I tried twice to change my password and both times it worked fine and I received an email from Adobe confirming the change. Yet I still get the same message. I'm afraid that I will just have to wait on hold tomorrow until I can reach tech support. Thanks.

I suspect an user error.
With the new ID and password in hand...
Disconnect the creative cloud located under the "hidden icons" (desktop, lower right).
Reconnect using the credentials using the ID and password mentioned earlier.
I had the same issue a few years ago and that solved it.
The issue is all resolved by software updates. I rented the D850 last fall just before a trip and had the same issue on my laptop. Leaving the next AM and in a panic had to come back to the office where I had viewed test shots earlier that day just fine. Updated LR, updated windows, and updated a few other things and by 2AM it was all working.
Mostly use the D810 and now have ordered the D850 as it is just so much better in almost all aspects.
Take your time and do the upgrades. It is likely not a camera issue, just the NEF files are somehow different on the D850 and the upgrades are needed. If I remember mine opened corrupted (vari-colored lines).
If this helps at all I just recently updated and these are the latest release numbers
Photoshop 19.1.1
LR Classic 7.2
ACR 10.2

You don't need to login to just update your CC, just click on the Adobe cloud icon, then ckick on >app<, then click on whichever program needs updating and you're done!
I had the same problem with my Nikon D7100 and my D500. Download the Adobe DNG (digital Negative) converter. Adobe provides a menu of versions for the converter, so see which version is suitable for your D850. It's a pain, but if your computer's processor is fast, you can convert your NEF files to DNG format rather quickly. Photoshop and Lightroom will open easily with the converted files. It's a real drag that with every new version Nikon comes up with, they develop a new version of their NEF files, and Adobe just can't keep up with them. That's why they offer their converter for free. If not for that, Nikon would lose quite a lot of business, that's for sure.
I had exactly the same problem with my D850, and I spent three separate sessions on the phone with an Adobe rep. I am not sure how it was done but it finally works.

I downloaded and installed the latest dng converter twice and still can't open the files. I guess I will be on the phone with them today as well.
Welcome to the age of Adobe CC. They have figured out how to increase their subscriptions by nailing anybody from this point on who buys a new camera. Marketing geniuses!

On the cup might be half full side, Adobe does provide and update the DNG Converter (for free). It enables the use of all RAW files from all cameras, present or future, to be processed in all past versions of Adobe photo processing software. The also continue to market the Elements versions on a perpetual license. Last but not least is the (free) Photoshop Express. I don't know what cameras it covers, but it opens RAW files from my Panasonic cameras.
In other words, if you have Lightroom 4,5 or 6 and like it and hate the idea of spending $10 a month the workflow adds one (free) step. You use DNG Converter to transfer your files from card to computer, then "Import" them with Lightroom. Total time is about the same, but you do it in two steps instead of the single "Import/Copy" step.
