In March I will be spending several weeks in the Sarasota area. Looking for good spots to capture both sunrise and sunset. Many thanks in advance for your sage suggestions.

Just about any beach, Gulf Coast sunsets can't be beat. There are usually water craft to include in the pictures and the North Jetty at Casey Key and the pier at Venice Beach can be used as foreground. Here is one I took at Nokomis Beach.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive north, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge makes a very compelling image at sunset/sunrise. Also try Ft. Desoto park, the city marinas, etc. This area is the connection between Pinellas and Manatee counties.

Sunrises in Sarasota are more difficult than sunsets. Most of the beaches are west facing. Anything east is looking across the Florida mainland toward Ft. Pierce etc. And you are basically looking across 350 miles of land toward a sunrise. Now, if you want sunrises that are looing across water for a good horizon and (relatively) close to Sarasota, you might consider going to the east side rest area for the Sunshine Bridge, which goes over the west side of Tampa Bay from Bradenton to St. Petersburg. It's the Manatee County rest area. Also the fishing pier on the west side might get you a shot through the bridge but I'm not sure it goes far enough north. You can travel across the Sunshine Bridge to St. Petersburg and get some nice sunrise shots from the harbor, looking east toward Mc Dill AFB, etc. Also, if you are there, be sure to visit the Manatee research center next to the TECO energy plant (generating station) on the east side of Tampa Bay. Its free and you should see many (possibly 100 or so) manatees lounging in the warm out flow of the electric plant. This is where many manatees winter.
Cross the Ringling bridge heading to St. Armands Circle and turn right immediately after crossing the bridge and park. Good shots of the bridge at sunrise from the parking area. Or walk over the bridge to the top and from here good shots of Sarasota Bay and skyline. Sunrise today just after 7:00am you need to be there an hour before sunrise for the best shots. Start shooting about 30 minutes before sunrise. Using a tripod think about vertical shots and making a panorama. The two positions I mentioned above cannot be used on the same day. Best to scout out these two positions before the morning of the shoot.

This one is looking across Sarasota Bay at the end of Pearl Street towards Longboat Key in Whitfield Estates.

For sunrise try the northeast end of Anna Maria Island.
