I just got my new A68 and took some photos in RAW. When I downloaded them, they opened in Picasa, then went "foggy" but was able to clear them up in Picasa and they will open in my Photo files in Windows. HOWEVER, when I try to upload them to Elements 10 or Lightroom 3.6 I get an error message that the files are unsupported. Does anyone else have an A68? What software do you use for processing RAW files?

AuntieM, the issue is that the file format of the A68 is not recognizable by the software you're using for processing. I'm not familiar with Elements and don't know what the latest version is. Lightroom is well past version 3.6. You might try to update the sofware, that is usually located in the Help button along the top menu of the program. That may help. Others who are more familiar with what you're using may provide additional assistance.

Here's some additional information from Adobe. https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

Did you get a CD from Sony with your camera? If so, it should have a RAW converter program on it. If not, Google "Sony RAW Converter" and you will see several Sony, and 3rd party, RAW converters available.

Is a RAW Converter Program the same as Elements or Lightroom - a post-processing program?

Look for Capture One Express (for Sony). It may be free from Phase One and not expensive from B&H.

You can get the software (CODEC) to display the raw file in Windows Explorer and Windows Photogallery here:

http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/download/vista_raw/

The A68 is supported on the current version of Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw.

I would look to the free DNG converter as only a temporary solution, since most other software applications do not read DNG files. If you go that route, save your original raw files.

Your best solution is to get the current version of Lightroom CC and you will also get Photoshop. It's $120/yr for both from Adobe, with free updates and upgrades. Some people refer to it as a rental program, but in reality anytime you "buy" software you are paying for a license to use it, so in a sense it is all rental. The CC plan just gives you a monthly option to pay for it. Of course, if you don't buy new gear often and you hold on to software for a long time (PSE10 and LR 3.6) - the CC package will be more expensive. Adobe is differentiating it's products so that the perpetual license products lack some of the features of the CC products, and in the case of Photoshop, they are likely to withdraw support entirely for it pretty soon. That will eventually happen with Lr as well.

Get Captue One For Sony. It's free and you'll find a link to it in Sony Support. Also the latest versions of Adobe Elements or Lightroom or Photoshop, but those you will have to pay for.

AuntieM is not trying to display them, she want something better for editing them. Sony raw files are not DNG.

She can Download Capture One Sony 11 and use the Express version for free or upgrade to the regular version for a reasonable price.

It's better than any of the free software. For someone who only owns a Sony camera and is just getting into raw conversion, it better than Lightroom or ACR.

I think you need to display the images so that you can edit them, Scotty.

There was possibly a suggestion to convert to dng.

And Picasa and My Photos are primarily viewers with some very rudimentary editing capabilities.

Sony Image and Video Conversion software is the only thing that is available from Sony for the A68, free to download here:

https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=ILCA68&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab

After comparing Capture One to Lightroom, I totally agree, there is no reason to use Lightroom - C1 is so much better in so many ways. It makes sense to upgrade to the Pro Sony version for an extra $50 (or whatever they are charging these days) -

I am finding this very interesting as I too have just begun to shoot in raw.
I have the sony A99II and have only used picassa until now for my jpegs. So do I need to also look into this Sony Capture program? I was wondering why the images looked as they did when I imported them to picassa--but thought maybe thats the way Raw did look until you processed it---I have an older elements11 program right now

FalconChase you are correct about Capture One, Adobe LR and PS. New Sony camera purchasers can get Capture One (for Sony cameras) for free.

But Sony Express C1 is not the full version of Sony C1. You have to pay for that.

The solution recommended to me was the DNG converter:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

It was an extra step prior to editing with PS Elements 13, but no big deal once you get used to it: you can drag an entire folder of raw images onto the shortcut icon and it will do them in one batch (after one-time setup on selecting where the converted files should be placed).

A very nice alternative to Picasa is Faststone Image Viewer - if you want free and easy

rehess was being facetious in asking, "Convert to what? DNG??" Only an Adobe fan would be comfortable with that.

Besides being superior to and easier to use than Lightroom, you can't beat free.

As for Adobe CC, you don't need a Swiss Army Knife to peel an orange.
