Oh no! Did you step in your cats' throw-up again? I would rant too LOL!

Really? You gotta' be kidding! I see this same post over and over again in this section. I don't get it. You mean to tell me that these clowns who ask these questions have all these lenses for their nice cameras and either don't know what they have or what they are suited for? C'mon! These have to be the same sort of people who buy D850's and shoot in auto only.

I have a plethora of lenses and I know which each and every one of them does and what they are best used for. If one is going to spend good money on a product, don't you think one would know what they are buying?

Normally, I only take one lens with me an 18-250mm telephoto). This is usually all I need. However, this time, I am taking two lenses with me since some of my shooting will include an indoor venue of which I have no idea what the lighting conditions will be. This would be a Zeiss 16-50mm F2.8 lens. That ought to do it. Plus the fact that I have a camera that does really well in low light conditions.

You see, when I buy a lens, I buy it for a purpose in mind and then I put it through the ringer. Isn't this what one is supposed to do?

The way I figure it, if some one has to go on to a photographic forum and has quality lenses but has to ask which lens to take or use on a trip/cruise, then I would think they would be better off with a point & shoot and be done with it. They would also save a ton of money buy not buying all of that expensive equipment which they have no idea how to use it..

I am done with my rant.

Thank you.

By the way, the D850 does NOT even have "Auto" shooting mode. Just so you are aware. None of Nikons Pro cameras offer Auto.
I knew that. I'm just messing around. Come to think of it, I used a D750 extensively at work and loved it until the higher ups took them away from us. I don't even remember if that camera had an auto mode. I have never shot in auto in my life.

Good for you, you want a prize or something?

My question is why do people have to start threads bragging about how much smarter/better/etc. they are?
Lol. Where was I bragging that I was better than anyone else? I am probably one of the worst photographers out there.

Yeah, it was late when I responded to you. I figured that you would catch the subtlety of my humor. Sorry about that.

I pretty much agree with your 'rant' trainkc, however I believe there are a few exceptions. When an OP asks for lens options concerning a specific venue he or she has never visited before can be beneficial. Recently on my camera club web site, a new member who had just moved to the area was going to visit the Denver Museum of Natural History, which she had never been to before and asked for a lens recommendation. This could also apply to zoo's. Many zoo'z animals are close, some far away and some require shooting through glass. Some are also posted by amateurs who just started the hobby and are asking advice from someone more knowledgeable. However, that being said I still enjoy reading the posts, just to see what is recommended and the reason why. Many times I learn something I didn't know.

I believe you can be competent in your abilities and still ask about what lenses to take on a trip. I know I asked about what lenses to take on a SPECIFIC river cruise.
Why? It's called research. I'm well aware of the differences between my Nikon 20mm 1.8 and my 16-35 F4. What I can't be sure of is, during that tour, who many sites might be inside, like churches or opera houses, where a faster lens would be better. How wide is the river during the cruise and would a 300mm be ok, or a 500mm or even a 200mm. Then there is the issue of how difficult are the walking tours, so you do you need to pack really light or can you take 3 or 4 lenses?

When I went to the Tetons, I contacted a local pro to get a better understanding of what lenses would be best in certain areas, not because I didn't understand my equipment, but with limited space, which lenses were essential and which could be left behind. So when I asked it was more research of the area and beyond looking Google Earth or the travel info. I wanted to take advantage of a photographers experience who had already done the trip.

It's not always being a noob, but being prepared with the right lenses for the locations you will visit. I'm sure I could have picked good enough from my own knowledge, but if someone can offer a tip, why not ask? It's how you learn and not miss a one time opportunity.

Mike

Perhaps it is not what the lens can do but the location they are going to is unknown. In that case ones who have been there can advise what worked best for them. This is the reason most ask about what is best to bring, I believe, not what the lens can as they know that.
So usually the question is valid. This includes a flash or tripod as those could be restricted or banned in many cases and why bring something that is prohibited? Or as we have seen here at some sporting events lens physical length is restricted so this is good to know.

Oh, no. I wasn't talking about the ones asking what to use when they are being sort of specific. What I mean is, why would one have to ask which lens to bring or use when going on a trip when they should know their equipment well enough that they should at least have a good enough idea what their lenses do? That is, unless they are totally novices just getting started. Keep in mind, I am not being all that serious; just making an opinionated observation. As far as tripods, flashes and such are concerned, those are very valid questions. Hell, I would not even know how to answer some of those questions. In fact, I have my own dilemma of sorts. I always carry my camera equipment as carry on. I know from experience how shit gets stolen from my luggage. So, knowing that there are new rules and regs concerning what may be carried on, how to stow batteries, I looked up the government regulations and the way they word it is that I must be pretty well naked if I wish to board an airplane. So, I called Southwest and I got shuffled to different people, all with different answers. I do have it pretty well figured out now. I am simply going to leave my stuff at home and buy a new camera (an expensive one so I can take good pictures). I wonder what lenses I should buy?

I agree with someone with 43058 posts under their belt, someone like that should know what's what. But maybe many others are not quite so sure what to take when.
I took that into consideration before making my stupid rant.

I posed a question the other day about Machu Picchu and what would be the best lens or lenses to take. Not because I don’t know what my lenses can do or what they are for, but I don’t know how close or how far I could and or would be to the subject matter, and/or if there would be birds etc. As I was curious if my 150 to 600 which is rather heavy would be of useful.
This kind of my point. Should not people do some homework before they go on a trip? I mean like, the 150-600 is rather heavy and lugging it around attached to a camera can get tiring. Nice lens though. I am sure that you will find plenty of photos of your destination on the internet that will help you to decide just how much "reach" you will need. That sort of thing. As a matter of fact, all manufacturers make some pretty good bridge cameras. They are fairly lightweight and not terribly expensive. I wonder why more people don't use these on their trips?

The "which lens" question was posted for the new pro answer section yesterday. It is a popular question that draws a lot of attention.
Yes, it does draw a lot of attention. My little rant seems to be doing the same thing. I had better watch out. Probably by the time this thread is exhausted, I will be blacklisted from this section.

I agree with you. The question is more how long a lens do I need for a trip to Alaska to photograph wildlife as opposed to a trip to Ireland?
Ahhh, but this is my point. Don't you think you should know your equipment well enough by now and make this decision on your own? Please understand that I am not trying to be insulting.

Ohhh... MT shooter can tell you all about me. he knew me from way back when I I knew nothing. Now I am dangerous. But you brought up another good point. This is supposed to be a learning forum. lately, I have not seen a lot of that on UHH. My point was along the lines of a little more advancement. To me, these folks asking about which lens to bring after describing what equipment they do have, should have a good enough working knowledge so as to not have to ask these sort of questions. This is just me.

Nah, we all love to occasionally play in a thread that has no real value other than to let people vent while entertaining everyone else. They are only annoying if done repeatedly by people who never post anything worthwhile, whether it be in this section, the Photo Gallery or elsewhere.

I think asking which lens to take is a legitimate question if you are going somewhere you have never been before and have weight restrictions for your luggage. I started photography in 1973, when stationed in (western) Germany. The camera came with a 55mm lens. I quickly learned that it was not enough. I bought a 135mm and then a 28mm lens. When I went out photographing, the 55 stayed in the barracks; it didn't have the width the photograph castles and it didn't have the reach to photograph long distances. I eventually bought a 70-280 zoom that stayed on the camera the bulk of the time, but I always had my 28mm with me whenever I went out. I wish I had the wider angled lenses, back then, that I have now!

If this sort of honest question irks you, I suggest that you just ignore it and pass it by. I do that with the bulk of posts on the Hog because I either don't have anything to add to the discussion or because I don't know anything about the gear or destination being discussed. What I like about the Hog is that, by and large, there are a lot of knowledgeable people here who are more than willing to share with those of us who are less knowledgeable.
