Trump has reminded me of being there for quite some while. For some reason I thought I was alone, but if you google "Chauncey Gardiner" you find more mentions of Trump than in his biography. Hope Trump is a Peter Sellers fan.
Big difference, Chauncey Gardner's intentions were benign. He did like his watching his TV. One of Peter Sellers' best roles, Shirley McLaine was excellent as well.

Should have said "an evil Chauncey Gardiner". Maybe I shouldn't have been, but I was surprised to see so much about Trump when I looked it up.

I am a fan of "Being There"; and I don't understand the analogy.
Chauncey was a simple, innocent, and honest man with good intentions; Trump is the opposite in every way.

I just ran across this topic, but Being There is one of my favorite films, because I love Shirley and Sellers...
I think Chance The Gardener was the simple and innocent fellow (the viewer had a window in to who was whom)...
...but Chauncey Gardiner was totally enamored of TV and completely misinterpreted in terms of what value he held as far as business acumen.
Although trump watches ONE channel (Faux Noise), different from Chance/Chauncey, maybe that, and the dumbstruck stare, is where the similarity caught people up, but where it also kinda ends ???

I agree. But, the analogy does end there.
I liked Chance and Chauncey because their intentions were honest and good.
Trump is a indecent man with narcissistic-based intentions.
It was a very good film that I enjoyed both in my salad days and more recently.

I'm glad you were still watching - - I've said sooo much about sleazy trump - - he is just can't help but contaminate everything he touches - - and his supporters glisten in the glitz.
It's too bad Sellers stepped out so early - - he was a great guy with near perfect timing. I've taken metaphysical seminars with Shirley - - love her - - did you ever see Madame Sousatzka ???

Sellers was one of a kind.
I don't believe I ever saw Madame Sousatzka. I will look into that.

I suppose I should mention that Madame Sousatzka is not a comedy...
...but Peter Sellers in The Party was, if you haven't seen it...
And no Sellers fan could have ever missed Dr. Strangelove...

Clearly, I enjoyed both.
I especially liked what Sellers did in Lolita.
