JPEG deterioration in screen saver.

A couple of weeks ago a poster asked if Windows screen saver caused jpegs to deteriorate. The ensuing discussion took off immediately into an argument about whether repeated opening and saving of jpegs caused them to deteriorate. Some responders went so far as to save files dozens of times to prove their point. I think they missed the point of the original question.

I have nearly a 100 of my favorite pics in a slide show on my desktop background. Every now and again one of them will deteriorate into a snowy mess like the screen capture attached. However if I open the actual file in a regular viewer, the picture is fine. (See original).
This would appear to be a Windows problem rather than a jpeg problem. Only some files are effected. Any suggestions on why this occurs?

Here's a similar, but not identical problem, and some suggestions:

My Win 7 screen saver will do "effects" sometimes.

One thing to keep in mind, if your screen saver jpg looks anemic (not the problem described above) is that stupid Windows (Win 7 at least) displays everything on the desktop in sRGB mode. If you are saving your jpgs in Adobe RGB and open in sRGB it will look terrible. Many Windows programs and even websites will recognize the color space and adjust accordingly, but Windows is not among them. Convert to sRGB before using as a screen saver or desktop background.

I did not know that. Thanks for the info. My desktop slide show is sort of a rolling 'favorites' collection.
