The cause is most likely the software in ACR isn't updated. The worst is that the latest update may not be current for your D3300. The first thing I'd try is updating ACR. You can do that through Bridge.

Photoshop incorporates any new RAW enhancements as they become available in the current edition of Adobe Camera Raw. Older versions are not upgraded to open newer RAW files. Your choice is to use other aftermarket programs to initially open your new files and then use PS5. Does Nikon include such a program with their cameras? I use Canon, so am not familiar with what comes with Nikons as a matter of course. I don't know enough about Nikon camera series to suggest if ACR for CS5 will include your camera.

Nikon has Nikon capture. I don't really like how it works.

Adobe has a free program that will convert your NEF file to DNG. They contain all the data that CS5 uses. You still retain your NEF files if you want. It will do batches, just point to the folder.

I used it for years with CS5, my newest camera a D500. Download here:

CS5 only supports ACR to 6.7, so I would assume the D 3300 requires a later version. Time to move on, or use DNG converter!

Don't do DNG - that is just a short-term fix. Better to break down and upgrade your software. Aside from providing the raw support you are looking for, there are 1000 reasons why Photoshop CC 2018 is better than what you are using - and most have to do with image quality results, but a good portion has to do with performance and ease of use. I am not saying that any version of PS is ever easy to use, but I will state that the newer version has some enhancements that speed up your workflow.

This refers to CS6 but the OP mentions having CS5.

You can also use Nikon's free software (Nikon View), and convert your files into TIFF format which your version of Photoshop will handle. I was never happy using Nikon software for working on image files, but thought they handled NEF raw conversion best.

Yes, the Adobe website says that you need ACR 8.4 or newer to support the D3300.
