Being a stereophile is pricey - the speakers alone are $11,900. You can buy them on Audiogon. Fortunately, my ears are not that sensitive.

You should try to be a quilter with sewing/embroidery machines, notions, books, software, 100% quality cotton quilting fabric.

Here's the irony of that photo: The only humans truly able to hear what that system can produce are under 20 years old! And they probably can't afford it unless they own an Internet startup.
That said, the best, most sought-after recording engineers are those in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. They can only hear up to around 13,000 Hz, but they understand sonic depth, balance, mixing, and music. I learned a tip from the pros a few years ago: mix your music on a pair of small desktop speakers, and test it with iPhone EarPods and a factory-installed car CD player. That's what 98% of your audience will play it through, anyway.
I did sound reinforcement for my college union and radio production for the college station and two commercial stations. I can't hear as well at 62, but with what I know now, I can mix a lot better!

While headphones are more polite, and they can sound better, they don't give you that full-body experience you get from big woofers and separate midrange drivers and tweeters. They don't tend to share well, either, and they also don't have as much of a $how-off factor.

I guess I’m really screwed. Photographer, audiophile, bibliophile, and pilot. My wallet keeps asking why I didn’t take up a cheap hobby. No wonder I’m always broke and out of bookcase space for books, CD’s, LP’s, and wall space for my lousy pictures. But, I’m not bored at the 3/4 of a century age.

Hobbies can be as expensive can be as cheap or expensive as you want to make it. Fishing can be done with a bamboo pole or from a bass boat or go the next step and have a trawler. Photographers can do a lot with a point & shoot or go to a medium format and so on. For some it's the equipment not the doing that is fun. Most of us are somewhere in between. Just saying - dave

As a pilot, you will appreciate the fact that a friend of ours in Tucson just finished building and test flying a bi-wing. He is 83 and has another kit to build already.

We don't even have the TV hooked up. We only get Comcast Internet. We watch movies on my 2013 retina display MacBook Pro. It's so bleak with bare trees and a little snow, and gray skies, that I'm not even going out to take photographs.

Like you, no TV... Internet with Netflix. Seasonal depression, so I stare at this one-eyed babysitter most of the time. :-)

Hobbies are all a great waste of time and money: but it doesn't stop us thinking we could make or save money by doing them. The alternative is working better or harder for longer! Which would you prefere?
