Why is the sky blotchy?

This photo is a 3 shot HDR (+2EV, 0, -2) photo made from 1 shot. The sky from the original isn't blotchy but the HDR is. How do I correct this or hoe do I process it in Photomatix to prevent this?

Do you have control over the HDR? Can you adjust the intensity? I have an HDR effect on my Picasa program to process photos and I can adjust the intensity. If you can just adjust it down until it looks better. The original is really pretty good, the sky and hills are blown out but overall a good scene.

I have it at 50% strength because I don't like overdone HDR

Simple - do your HDR stuff on a separate layer (top) then make a layer mask and paint away the sky in the HDR layer. It is not possible (or at least very difficult) to get a smooth sky in an HDR image as it works by exaggerating the tonal differences.

Looking at the original I dread to think what increasing the exposure did to that already over exposed sky.

I like subtle HDR but a plain, dreary sky is not perhaps the best time to take the original shot. Is it worth waiting a few days for possibly a better sky?

Others might advise 'adding' a sky but then why not add builds, people, animals or more photogenic scenery.

Well done for what you have achieved but that sky was a problem before you pressed the shutter :)

Indeed! Why not?

One's work is under one's control, so I say add 'til your heart's content!

Yup, I agree as long as we are not told..

'This is a view that I saw at .............'

Software allows us to do what we want

Have you looked to see what you can do with just adjustments in Photoshop. I managed to get a pretty decent image without using HDR. I'll post if you wish.

I didn't color or swap anything, just worked with what you had in layers and levels. A little color saturation and brightness adjustment, too.

The idea of HDR is to show details in otherwise blown out or too dark areas. So the original 'plain' sky will show up wisps of clouds and the range of blues. Grain(noise) will also be more apparent which may need to be reduced by a noise removal plug-in/software/filter or simply bluring the sky a bit. These adjustments can be done in Photomatix itself(later versions)before the processing stage.
