All major Camera are working very hard to manufacturing Super Zoom (Bridge cameras) with one exception. Pentax is still upgrading and placing their lines in the DSLR. I called Pentax customer service and was told their VS20 was their only bridge. The camera looks nothing like a Bridge camera. It is a 20 zoom, but that is about it.

My niece told me yesterday she was tired of carrying their large slr around to take photos of her children. I have read the photos taken by a Bridge is very close to being as good as a DSLR. In fact I have read many professionals are using their Bridges more than their DSLRs. The sales of the Bridges have to be a huge seller. My question is why would Pentax not also pursue this direction?

Don't know, but research the micro 4/3 system. Small cameras that give DSLR results.

Hi,
What makes you think that the Pentax Superzoom in not a Bridge Camera - it is.
Google the definition of "Bridge Camera" - it will come out something like this "most current bridge cameras are digital, typically featuring full manual controls over shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance and metering. Generally, their feature sets are similar to consumer DSLRs, except for a smaller range of ISO sensitivity because of their typically smaller image sensor (a DSLR has a 35mm, APS, or 4/3 size CCD or CMOS). Many bridge cameras have long zoom lenses."
The fixed lens Pentax will give almost the same quality photos as a DSLR (depending on the lens used - it will give better than some "kit lenses). As mentioned above, the main problem with most of this type of camera is the smaller range of ISO sensitivity and they usually only go from about f2.8 to f8.
One advantage that they do have is the marvelous super zooms. One of the older Panasonics (F5 or FZ5 I think) has a marvelous lens and ends up giving the 35mm equivalent of a 400plusmm x f2.8 IN A LEICA LENS.
All the best,
Col

Thanks for straghting me out. I thought super zoom and Bridge were synonymous. The heat in AZ is allowing me time to chose between a super zoom and a DSLR. From some of what I have read the two have very close image quality, while the video is better in the DSLR. Reading reviews gets confusing. The DSLRs are heavier, and of course more expensive. I just get my mind set on the Canon SX40 and read the Canon SX50 may be coming out soon. But it is fun searching.
