So, we are all using software to stitch but....

Should we trust the output and use it 'as is'?

I think not.

I have run several experiments lately using of all things a closeup that is not a panorama.

I simply took 4 captures and made them go through a stitching software. I used ICE and ACR.

ICE won again so that is what I used. The PNG file looked fine but the white were simply gone. I used save as and selected Adobe photoshop as export format and checked Composite only. (Why mess with layers if I am ok with the results?)

Anyway, in PS CC I used my routine adjustment and the results were much better in the highlights that I targeted for correction.

See below.

Flip images after download. The thumbnails are not representative of the changes.

PSD included if you are curious.

Note: ICE PNG is 60MB. I converted it to a JPG for posting.

I used to use ICE, but a program upgrade brought a new interface that I could not stand and got mediocre results. So I switched to Lightroom, which by that time had added Merge to Panorama in the Develop\Edit menu. Which I use all the time now. Occasionally, if the component images are HUGE, I will export everything to Photoshop and merge to Pano there. This handles 99% of all panos I have to do.

Can you describe how you processed in ACR? I've stitched panos with PS only to find problems, but were correctable when manually selecting the stitching method.

Could you post your original 4 images to try?

BTW: I was unable to connect to the link where your PSD file is located.

Thanks Ron, no hurry. I just need to see if PS/LR will let me down with an example. And if so, find an alternative tool that fills in when Adobe fails. Thanks, in advance, for your help.
