I recently ordered a Toshiba Qosmio X875-Q7290 laptop and am looking to purchase an external monitor for side by side use. Does anyone have any thoughts on any one brand over another. Possibly with a 23" screen.

Rather than brand, I suggest you concentrate on getting an IPS type monitor as they are the best for viewing photographs.

Please forgive my lack if knowledge here, what does IPS stand for? Thanking you in advance for your knowledge and kindness.

IPS stands for in-plane-switching. Here's a link for IPS monitor reviews in CNET. Be prepared, they're pricey.

I have an ACER 21" monitor mounted above my laptop, only use for Photoshop, works great. However, the controls of the ACER are very 'touchy' and I have difficulty adjusting them. I don't know if other brands have this problem.

Unfortunately a lot of people do not know about IPS monitors, if they did they would not settle for anything but an IPS display instead of the inferior TN panels on so many of these laptops and pc's. When photographers boast about their MACs and apple products it is predominatley that these products usually have IPS displays. Although I am not an Apple lover ( prefer pc for so many more reasons) this is one thing that Apple does right. Of course you are over paying for that Apple display because LG actually makes their displays and sells under their own LG name for a lot less. If you are looking for a display you can obtain a reasonable priced LG IPS LED LCD from $160 ( Costco) to $250 ( bestbuy) . I have one for my desktop and I recently purchased an s series laptop from Sony which has an IPS display.

Make sure whatever monitor you buy has a native resolution equal to your laptop monitor. The guts are probably made in China or Taiwan, but I like the Dell UltraSharp line of monitors.
