Well I went out just before sundown hoping to get some birds at the feeders for a last snack before night. I also decided to take a break from learning my 80D and decided to use my 5DIV.
Only one quick visit by a hummer, no shot. So I spotted this orgy on the milkweed plant. A couple of single frames but too close for great depth of field so I put the flash on ETTL and the shutter on high speed burst. I then did two bursts, one of 32 frames and one of 28. Slightly different angle of view in singles and the two bursts. Only one frame in the 28 shot burst didn't have flash. The others all had good fill flash. Too much movement in the 28 frame burst so lots of ghosts and extra edges. I will try again by picking just some of the frames. But the 32 frame burst came out OK, just had to crop the uneven edges. I had the focus set on the closest distance-backed off the camera so nothing was in focus and as the burst fired I moved the camera in until the far side of the milkweed cluster was in focus.
#1 One of the best single frame shots, but not enough depth of field for plant and all the bugs to be sharp.
5DIV, 100-400L mk II @ 400, 1/200 @ f/8.0, ISO 400 hand held with flash.
#2 32 frame focus stack
5DIV, 100-400L mk II @ 300, 1/200 @ f/5.6, ISO 400 hand held with flash
(don't believe the exif - camera is 12 hours off-it was 4:53 PM-have to reset it)
That's great. Thanks, Robert.

Looks like a real party going on there, lol. Both are good shots, Robert, but the second one is the pick of the two IMO--sharper & cleaner.
Earl.

I hope #2 is sharper, it is the 32 frame focus stack! #1 was about the best I could do with a single shot
I was almost afraid to look.
Both fantastic shots, Jerry. My pick is the first but only because the softness of the milkweed is very appealing to me.

Thanks, yes #1 is a good shot.
But if you are going to do bugporn the bugs should be in focus.

A complete sex education and biology course in one photo..... OK use in english.... "Students write a short story on what you see in this photo" ... then the stories could be passed on to Psych Course.... great photo and excellent education... regarding the NOT NEED of tripods.

That would be college level. Try it at High School or Jr High you could end up on the 6 O'clock news.
"Teacher's assignment to write about pornography results in riot when "Little Old Ladies and Others Against Smut" and "Weirdos For Freedom of Thought and Actions" clash while picketing School Board during teacher's hearing. Teacher's home firebombed. Board President resigns after accidentally sending link to his collections of "Art Photos" by mistake when replying to a request for a copy of the hearing transcript from local paper. Head of "Little Old Ladies..." goes into hiding after several pictures of her are found in the "Art Photos", two members of "Weirdos for..." in jail for fire bombing "Teacher was a traitor to the cause when he apologized for the assignment."
Students send petition to State "Please send National Guard to rescue us, we are being held hostage by aliens."
Thanks. Only one of about five attempts worked, tripod would have upped that keeper rate.
