Here are some macro photos of winter flower blossoms, taken last Sunday, in my continuing adventure into macro. Your honest C&C is welcome, as always.

Brian, NONE of these photos are macros. They are all less than life-size, which makes each of your photos a close-up, NOT a macro.

The APS-C sensor in your DSLR is the size of your thumbnail (approximately 24-mm x 16-mm). If you macro-photograph anything larger that your thumbnail, like these flowers, you cannot capture the entire subject, just the center of each flower.

Hello Douglass, Thank you for looking at my photos, and your explanation, which has improved my understanding of what a true a macro photo is. It goes without saying that I'll keep on trying. Since your response I've been experimenting with my camera and lens so as to understand how it works. I'll post new submissions soon. Thank you again, for taking the time with me. Brian :D

I see that you are using a Canon 100-mm lens. To obtain true macro in your camera, you need to photograph at Minimum Focusing Distance (MFD), where your Working Distance (between lens front element to subject) is about 160-mm = 6.3-inches.

To acquaint yourself with true macro capability of your camera, I want you to follow this exercise:

Thank you for providing me with the exercise. Attached is, I believe, my very first macro photo. Iv'e used an Australian dollar and a South African 10c coin, which have similar dimensions to those of a US dime and a quarter. I also did the ruler photo, which proved the maths formula. The canon APS-C is 22.3 x 14.9mm. I think that I am now on the macro road, thanks to you. :?

No fair using coins that are more attractive than U.S. currency! Otherwise, well done.

nice..the macro world is fun...but I have found the little flowers do not show great detail like the bigger ones do...the ones with large areas in the center where the seeds are held... The insects are the most fun..
