I am wondering if I can use a Vivitar 285 flash with my Canon Xsi. I heard that the flash electronics in the Rebels is not compatable with all flashes.

The 285 has to much trigger voltage , it could damage your camera. I use the same model of Canon..

or get a Wein safe sync hot shoe. It reduces the trigger voltage to the camera.

That may be your safest bet. OTOH I've measured the sync voltage on my 285HV to be around 8.5 volts. I've used it for many years on my 20D and more recently on my 7D without problem. I also have an older 285 that has a higher sync that I only fire using optical or radio triggers. Same with all but one of my Norman packs. The one "modern" pack is 6v.
That being said, if you can find the Japanese built units, they're tough as nails (except for the plastic foot). They put out gobs of light and they keep on tickin' for fairly short money.
