Anyone know why the photography tripods typically have an odd leg - usually 2 legs have a rubber sleeve while one does not. And it's not a mono-pod. Sometimes just one leg has a sleeve.
Just curious.

Sure the third leg just lost its sleeve. Every tripod I have ever seen has had three skid-free pads.

Two legs is all you can rest on your shoulder so that is all you really need padded.
One of my tripods has all three legs padded and the other has two padded legs and I'm not noticed any difficulty using either.
I can't see where only one leg padded would be useful.

I've never noticed that except for those where one leg becomes a monopod. I have seen a couple of cheaper ones with foam on only one leg, considered for carrying. The only reason I could think of doing it would be to save money.

Can you point to some that have it only on 2?

Sounds like a defect to me.

I just bought a new Cameron tripod that has foam padding on only 1 leg. I assumed that it was so you have a warm leg to carry the tripod with.

My Surei has 2 padded legs. the Zomie Q555 has 2 padded legs, some have just one. Monopod adaptable make sense, but not the others. Thought maybe it was to determine the orientation in the dark. Align the camera with the odd leg so you don't need a light?
Who knows.

Many Manfrotto tripods only have two legs padded. It's more common than not.

Not a defect. Many manufacturers only pad two legs.

I’ve either read or been told that the padding is provided as an insulator against the cold when carrying it in cold conditions.

That is what it's for but I believe the OP was wondering why it's only applied to two of the three elgs.

It is common when working with a tripod to set up with two legs, one on either side of you, with the third leg out in front of you. When you want to move either forward or back you simply grasp the two legs on either side of you, lift and move. Since you never grab more than two legs at a time, only two need padding. Knowing that, many manufacturers simply eliminate the unneeded pad on the third leg.

I added foam padding to my Manfrotto tripod, applying it to only two of the legs. The main reason for not padding all three legs was that it did not fold-up compact enough to fasten the retaining strap for packing or carrying if all three legs had the foam padding. Two padded legs are comfortable when toting it on my shoulder. Personally, I don't see any reason to have all three legs padded.
